Dirty Devil River, The Burr Desert, Burr Point, Bert Mesa and to the east across the winding deep canyons and stark dry ravines of this widely meandering Dirty Devil River lies Sam's Mesa and Gibex Point of The Big Ridge bounded by deep Happy Canyon, Sam's Mesa Box Canyon, and others. Names of remote legend. To the west lies the high undulating snow-clad ridges and peaks of the Henry Mountains south of tiny Hanksville, Utah. From the high overlooks of the Dirty Devil one can see the distant Flat Tops in the San Rafael Desert to the north and seemingly forever in all directions on this clear windless crisp January day. I traveled south out of Hanksville early in the morning on and then ventured east and southward on dirt roads and 4x4 trails to various Dirty Devil Overlooks by means of The Burr Desert and Bert Mesa. This was only a solitary day trip but the scenery and isolation were remarkable. Patches of snow only were found on the north facing sides of the desert vegetation and desert topography. The trails were either dry or frozen wherever I was for the most part. The sandstone hewn trail from Burr Point dropping down hundreds of feet to Bert Mesa was lots of fun going down and coming back up and not at all difficult with not a speck of snow or mud. Bert Mesa has miles of winding easy red desert trails in several directions. Very scenic flat desert mesa with views once again at the high peaks to the west of the Henry Mountains and deep down into the canyons of the Dirty Devil along the eastern rim of Bert Mesa. Here are pictures of my day. I will definitely be going back to further explore in this area with friends and family. So many places in so many directions.
