Dirty starter on D40 Navara

The other day after fueling up the rig, a D40 Navara, failed to start, quite all of a sudden and with no prior warning. It wouldn't even crank. To cut to the chase, the dealer told me that it was nothing more than a dirty starter.

Has this happened to anyone else? How common is this?

In all fairness, the rig had just come back from a tropical, 6,600km expedition...

?? WTH?

Take a look at the battery. Check connections, etc.

If things like that are due to dirty starters, few of us would have vehicles that start-

No, I actually saw them uninstall and clean the starter. There's been no problem after the cleaning. In fact, the starter now has a jet engine hiss that sounds sharp. Apparently it's a rather common occurance.

I had mine fill with muddy water and froze that way, when I pulled it appart the planitary gears were all frozen in place. But I doubt that it would be the same problem for you.

Well I may have had muddy water which, instead of freezing, evaporated leaving behind crud that prevented cranking and starting.
