Use to own a D2 and there are a lot of places to get parts and equipment for these monsters. You biggest concern is with the fact the D2 is a ’03. If it was made the front half the year there is no CDL ability in the transfer case. Without a CDL system, you are stuck with the traction control system. Traction control does not work to well; the speed sensors have a lot of issues. If the brakes sequel for to long the Hall Effect sensors magnets will shatter, give the dreaded three amigos. To get CDL, all you need to do is swap out the T-case front output with a ’99-’01 unit and then add a ’04 lever. This mod takes about 2 hours. Then there is the rear drive shaft. It uses the roto flex system, or better known as the rubber donut. Go to Great Basin Rovers and talk to Bill to get the conversion to a real u-joint and put on a decent rear drive line. Now for the front drive shaft. This is not grease able, and it sits way to close to the catalytic converters. Making the grease boil off and having the camber explode, taking out your oil pan, catalytic converters and transmission. No need to replace the drive shaft, it is well built. All you need to do is make it better by adding real u-joints and having a machine shop make a grease able pivot bearing for you. The front drive shaft uses the same u-joints from a Volvo 500 series.

I could go on for ever on modifications on these things. I did love mine until the engine fire when the oil cooler line busted. Still have it in my yard and I cry every time I see it, and when I think I put in over $22,000 in modifications into it. Oh well, such is life. Now it is time to build a new rig and building is half the fun.

By the way, Discoweb is a good source of information. Just don't ask any questions and do the oppisite to what some of them tell others to do.

Nice write-up NV but to clarify... none of the 2002 or 2003 DII's have CDL. Only the first part of the production year 2001 have it, the remainder of the 2001's don't have it. He will need to get a T-case from a 1999 - early 2001 DII.

How come you don't drop in a 4.6 into your DII? Or did the fire make it unrestorable? Reminds me... I had better check my lines!

Saw your Alaska post, thanks!

stevenmd thanks for the clarification on the CDL. Was writing a lot and missed out the begining of '01. I made it sound like all of '01 had the nipple. Your welcome on the Alaska info and like I said, I can help with some trip ideas.

As for the engine I used the stock 4.0 block with a 300 Buick crank from RPI and a mild Crown cam from D&D Fabrication. I then used the 4.6 stroke using the 4.0 heads and pistons. No need to go with the 300 Buick stroke, the only difference between the 4.6 and 300 stroke was only a few thousand of an inch. To use the 300’s stroke would have been some head modification. Then I got rid of the 4HP22 and put in a nice blueprinted/balanced R380 from a DI that was able after the mods to use regular gear oil. Then to get the power from the engine I used a shimmed Defender fly wheel and clutch.

I will say this, when I did the mods to the engine, I did not have the dreaded 25,000 mile rear main oil seal issue. Matter of fact it got rid of all the oil leaks. For the first few months, I checked the oil every day to see if it was still full. I just could not believe I was driving a rover without any leaks. Before the engine fire, I went 68,000 miles without out any of the many leaks a rover lover loves to see. It was also nice to be able to drive around without the EPA setting up oil spill zones where ever I parked. I just could not believe how out of balance and what poor castings the rover block had.

I still have the rig and will not part with it. I loved it to much and there is a lot of blood and blood in it. I am now trying to source a nice TD5 to place into it. Found one in Florida, now I just need to have him give it to me instead of putting it into his rig.

If you check craiglist under vehicles for the Reno area, I believe there is a guy there who sells a TDI conversion. Don't quote me on that though! If you can't find it, let me know and I will do a search for it.
