Discovery jerry can placement?

I have a 96 D1 with no roof rack & no plans to add one.
I was wondering if anyone has mounted extra fuel storage to there
Discovery & where did you put it?

I'd like to mount a jerry can to the rear? The ladder rack (I don't have one)
doesn't seem like a very sturdy place either.

Anyone have ideas?

Thanks.

I built a similar mount on my spare a few years ago. Eventually the spare mounting frame cracked. Since then when I do need to take along a jerry can I just bungy it into the cargo area. I do a lot of long distance treks but it's amazing how seldom I ever really needed spare fuel. Most times I used it to fuel up the Jeeps that were along.......

Thanks for the replies....

I like the idea of mounting it off the spare tire.

RonL, Did you buy that mount or make it?

FortyMileDesert, I agree most of the time you really don't need the extra fuel.
I'm thinking about going to moab & places south this spring and would just
rest easier knowing I have a extra splash or two with me.

I wouldn't mount the can on the back of your tire carrier. The wieght plus the leverage is going to be hell on that back door.

x2 The extra weight will be brutal on already suspect Disco door hinges.

Am I the only one whose 235/85 spare juuuuust squeaks onto the top of the bumper?

I figure it helps hold up the rear door :)

I agree with that, in rough terrain even the original holder would not last long.
A separated wheel carrier is the way to go

Honestly, where are you going that is more than a disco tankfull between gas stations? No where in the 48 states.

Actually there are quite a few places where you can go in NV and UT where you will need more than 300 miles of range.

MonkeyBoy - Remove your spare tire carrier from the back door and remount it upside down. Then grind a notch in it to clear the rear window wiper.

If your "offroading" (forest service roads, jeep trails etc) in colorado & many other western states. It's easy to put on over 200 miles and not really go
anywhere so to speak. Then add in idle time, 4Lo conditions etc..your MPG drops. I can only speak for myself but in those conditions my gas mileage
goes down the drain!

Extra fuel storage without a roof rack is going to be a pain.. it would appear.
