Discovery starte Grinding

I just hoped into the Rover to go get some football beer and when I started the Rover up I got a nice grinding sound. Did it again when I got back in to come home from the store. Anyone have an idea what I should I look for or should I just get a new starter?

It runs fine and starts right up.

Sounds like it's just worn out.
I highly recommend the Denso gear reduction starter from Britishstarters.com
If you haven't done it already, it would probably be a good time to switch to a larger/better quality battery to starter cable as well.

My new starter is coming in Thursday. Any advise on the removal and refit? I have done this a bunch on jeep but it looks like there’s a little more going on around the starter on the Rover. I’ve looked up in the Rave but its little help.

8mm allen socket for the bolts.
Use a pick or something to clean them out so the hex seats fully.
For the top bolt I find it easiest to remove by using enough extensions so that the ratchet/breaker bar is just in front of the diff.
Don't forget to disconnect the battery negative terminal. ;)

I wish I would have had a little more time to buy one of those gear reduction starters. When mine **** the bed, I just got a remanufactured started from Napa and it cost about $200.

Been there done that, almost welded a wrench to the engine block of a VW. :Wow1: Luckily a hammer was nearby so I could knock it off quickly.

I even felt a little guilty for not mentioning it in my first reply to your thread. Only a little though. ;)

Yeah, I have an idea it only takes once to learn your lesson. I know it only took me once when I was about 17. LOL

No biggie, I needed to get it done quickly, so I'll have to live with the Napa starter. With all new cables and starter, I am pretty happy with how easily it fires over.

There's a spring clip that fits on the solenoid, and another bracket at the other end that's held with a bolt.
