Fiat has lost half its market share in Europe in the last 4 years. Look up Fiat sales figures. Both Jurgen Schrempp and Sergio Marchione were egotistical enough to think they could come to the U.S. and change the industry. Their arrogance worked against them and the company has suffered due to their incompetence. Dieter Zetsche was starting to bring things back to normal when he was called back to Germany to fix Mercedes quality issues. Mercedes had to sell Chrysler because they were having quality issues of their own and Zetsche originated the sale of Chrysler to focus on fixing Mercedes 10 year decline.
The only saving grace is Jeep, which has been hugely profitable for every company that bought it. Maybe not enough to save the company, but enough to extend their demise a few years.
Properly managed Jeep as a stand alone company would be very profitable.
