Dog Food/Toy Storage

Hi guys. Getting ready to do my first long trip with my 2 dogs. We are looking to be away from the house for around 10 days. I was wondering what is the best way to pack and store their food and toys. In the past for long weekends I just used a small action packer with their food in some 1 gallon plastic jars and their toys between the jars. That works great but each gallon jar only is about 2 days worth of food. Right now I'm thinking just fill the action packer with food and toss their toys on top of the food. Then seal the action packer with some foam tape to try and limit the smell and elements from getting in or out. I'm open to idea! I'm trying to stick with the small action packer boxes as they pack so nice on my roof rack. Thanks guys!

My dogs just eat raw chicken drumsticks and vegetables so their food always takes up valuable beer space in the cooler. If they ate kibble, I would highly consider one of those collapsable nylon bowls with the cinch top in addition to bulk storage. I have a couple of the collapsable nylon water bowls and they're awesome.

Working on doing this very thing now for a trip we leave on in the morning
X3 on the zip lock bags. The wife got some large, 2 or 3 gal ones from work and I throw then in then into a small action packer. Those things rock.

Oh duh! I never even thought about zip lock bags! Some times we just try to make things too complicated. Thanks guys!

Mike,
I have been using a waterproof roll top dry bag from Cabelas for dog food. It works for several days worth of storage to over a month. I am able to put a full 40 lb. bag of dog food in it. I usually have a medium sized tupperware (that lasts two days) inside that I just refill with the large dry bag. I travel with my dog all the time. It is just a typical roll top boat dry bag.

This is a great idea!

Depending on how many dogs I am riding with or for how long I alternate between 3 different sizes of rubbermaid containers. I like the idea of ther food storage getting smaller as the trip goes on.

I use these, they work great because the bowl can go inside, it seals waterproof and gets smaller as the food gets lower...and I've used these on the roof rack before, full of dog food and no issues, even in the rain...

one note though, they don't contain the smell, so if you forget and leave them out at night, the racoons will eat right through the soft side...trust me i know :)

I use ziplocks too, the 1 gallon ones fit his back back perfectly

bowls, I use a huge black cattle feeder as anything else he just tips over

The nylon fold bowls are great for a day trip fill pack and open when required.

Mines a fussy eater, and never finish's his bowl , he just snack as an when required.

Chicken legs....ha mine regurgatates the bones...not a nice present in a RTT !

If going on a trip where we might separate from the vehicle to camp, hike, etc, I load the dogs' backpacks with ziplocks of food + collapsible bowls. Otherwise, i generally pack food in a plastic bucket with lid. Have a stainless bucket that can mount inside their crates for water, and always keep a couple of big water bottles full and at the ready in my garage fridge so I can grab and go.

As far as toys go, I usually keep a bag packed and ready to go with balls, dummies, leashes, treats, etc.

Thinking about picking up another action packer to tote all this in, though... The action packers fit nicely under the toolbox in the bed of my truck and would keep everything organized a bit more neatly...

good thread!
