We've had a pretty good season. Bird count seems to be up from last year (not including the influx of the Eurasian dove). Wind has been a major factor and certainly has put a premium on accurate pass-shooting. Nonetheless, we are getting limits. In fact, I can't go out this evening until we consume some of the birds in the fridge.
I understand that the Eurasian is taking over from the mourning dove in W. Texas. Anyone down there confirm this? Up here they do not count towards the bag/possession limit, so we are free to add the collared ones to our fare without limitations.
Since we have so many introduced game birds—pheasant, gray partridge, chukar, to name some—I'm not sure why the freedom to exterminate the Eurasian dove. I suppose it has to do with dominant species. Apparently the Eurasian tends to displace the mourning. Maybe one of you F&G guys can enlighten me.
Weather is changing a bit. I imagine the migrating ones (We seem to have a fair quantity of dove that winter-over here.) will be heading south.
