Dreaded Bendix ABS

Does anyone know where I can source an ABS accumulator for a 1991 XJ with the Bendix system? We dont have any pick and pulls nearby and the only one that is close(Idaho) is sure they dont have any left. Is this part unobtainium?
Kind regards

Waste of time...

I was given (free) my 91 Briarwood by some folks for the same reason. I went to a Pull-a-part and nabbed a regular booster and master cyl. and it's still working fine after 360k miles!!! You could prob buy a new booster/mc for less than another abs brain that will die again.

The local Jeep dealer is willing to warranty the whole deal but they cannot find the accumulator anywhere. I dont have the time to find regular brake system parts and swap out the entire brake system. This is my wifes car so I need it back on the road yesterday.

If you can't find an accumulator, are willing at least to consider deleting the ABS parts?

my buddy has a 1990 and he just deleted his ABS system. I think he had a few head-scratching moments, but otherwise it was a slam-dunk.

I'm going to likely remove the ABS system from my 1992 (non-bendix) as well, when and if I put the non-abs Chryco 8.25" rear axle in.

let me look around and see if I can find his thread on naxja. At least you can ponder the notion...

here's one small thread:

I understand your dilemma. If it helps, that year ABS was "optional", the dealer may fix it using non ABS stuff.. Maybe not.?. If it helps, almost all the ABS stuff can stay and you can remove it later if you wish. The booster and master cyl. are literally a remove/replace deal. The only difference is where the hard lines go into the master. If you sawlogs I'n the regular system ( 2bolts and the pin under the dash) all you need is to connect the lines and bleed the brakes. That gen ABS is very limited I'n what it does compared to modern, high tech stuff. Not trying to steer you into trouble.. Just offering a better, long and short term fix. ESP. Considering nobody has the original part anyway...? Good luck! :)

Thank you for the advice it sounds like the best way to go. If I had the time to R&R the whole system I would. I'm just slammed right now. Maybe this fall.....I spoke to the dealer just now and they were able to find the part so we should be rollin by next week.

Cool! That makes bugspray "6" happy so you can be also... Lol! But if you think of it, price a booster/MC at a parts store next time your there. You may get excited... Haha! Lao as a side note, IIRC, the YJ,XJ, and even many grand cheeks use the same mounting pattern. And some of the Grands got a slightly bigger/ more powerful booster... Something about weight diff and towing and the V8... you could always like more breaks! Lol!

Napa part numbers. That's all you need. It will take about an hour to rip the old junk out, then another hour to get the new stuff in. Bleed and drive. No need to R&R anything. You could be driving by tomorrow.

R&R= Remove & Replace. Just FYI. :) gotta take out the old junk before putting anything back I'n. :) but it really is a simple deal. And if times short you can just wait to rip the old junk out as you have time.

Sweet! thanks for those PN#s thats half the battle right there! I will probably do it this fall as the ol' Jeep has lots of life left in her(not to mention brand new Blizzaks). Thanks for all the help and advice fellas!

My first XJ back in the day was a '91 Briarwood. I loved everything about this Jeep accept the problematic Bendix ABS system. After several attempts to fix it we finally said screw it and removed the ABS components and never looked back. Not sure what size tires you have, but ABS systems, especially the older Jeep versions ones, don't work very well with the larger rubber. Heck, one of the first mods I did to our '98 XJ was deleting the ABS system because I despise driving the Jeep offroad with the ABS system. Best of luck to you!

I'm tracking down the parts to switch it over....turns out the ABS motor they ordered did not fit!? this is ridiculous....I mean I understand this thing is 20 year old POS but it is still our DD and it still runs great. I'm just over it.
