Drive shafts for a Kj

I see a lot of people put better drive shafts on their vehicles and I was wondering if I should consider doing this to my Kj?:smiley_drive:

it should be a sealed unit. is it aluminum? i wouldn't bother unless you are having problems with it.

Tom Woods will make a custom one for the front. Pricy but nice. The one thing you need to keep an eye on is the rear boot on the driveshaft ( end towards the transfer case) hard to see but that boot does go bad. I have replaced mine plus several others I know of . Mine wasn't making any noise, just happened to check it one day , boot was completely gone.
Replacements on ebay for 250 or so

The stock rear driveshaft has U-joints and seems to have held up just fine for KJ's over the years. The front (propeller) shaft is a CV style. These will go out on you. A common replacement is a custom U-joint shaft with an adaptor plate to attach to the flange at the front diff (or the opposite - can't remember exactly). I believe this is also a common fix for Grand Cherokee's.

I can feel my new custom front shaft a little more (slight vibe) at highway speeds, but it might just be a hair out of balance. Otherwise I'm happy.

Great people and great customer service. I would suggest giving them a call and asking them any question you have. If you don't quite understand what they're saying, bring it back here and someone should be able to clarify it for you.

As far as your drive shaft goes... if there's nothing wrong with it, why replace it? Most people replace drive shafts for 3 reasons. They destroyed it, it needs to be rebuilt, or they lifted their vehicle and need a longer shaft preferably cv style and hopefully a little beefier.

I'm hoping if I keep it, to be adding a old man emu lift to it which would make it about I believe 1.5" taller.
