Dual Battery Install Complete

Finally. I got my dual battery system installed. Thank you Hilldwellar for your input on the battery choice. :sombrero:

The battery plate is made by Benchmark Designs (I did not use his system, just the plate). It's well made, strong, and easy enough to install, except Kurt (Cruiser Outfitters here in Utah) had to fab up a plate to sit the intelligent solenoid on. The difficulty was in removing the factory battery tray.

The kit is made by National Luna, and comes highly recommended by everyone I spoke with. It has an *intelligent solenoid* that:
1) charges the dedicated charge battery for 5 minutes upon start up
then
2) opens up so the secondary battery can also be charged.

The kit comes with a control monitor. With it, you can pair both batteries (for winching or jump starting another vehicle.
You can jump start your own dedicated start battery with your auxiliary battery
You monitor the status of both batteries with the control monitor.

The intelligent solenoid is called *intelligent* because it decides what needs charging, and does it.

Hopefully now, I won't have a repeat of the incident I had last spring with my other vehicle... battery died... no back up battery, no cell phone coverage, snowing, and several miles from help. Fortunately for me, I had set up camp, driven back within cell range, and had given a friend that was meeting me there, exact directions... to join me the next day.

The installation is super clean. I highly recommend Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters for any work like this you may be contemplating. Or any equipment you may need that he sells. Super knowledgeable, great work ethics, and just an all around nice guy. Thanks Kurt :sombrero:

I realize this is not for most folks. But as I spend lots of time in the back country camping - and overland traveling (for work and for fun), I feel it is a necessary addition to my outfit. :ylsmoke:

Looks awesome, Kurt is a good guy to deal with. I'm on the fence right now about dual verses small solar setup. I currently have a yellow top and going to install a 160 amp alternator I have on the shelf, so I am all set for daily trail use but may want a backup for when I pick up a nice fridge.

Wow; what a clean/beautiful install.
Keep us all up to date on how it works for you.

I love dual battery systems like this. Good electronics, matching batteries, clean install. It looks like NASA under there...

Very nice. I wish my Jeep was that clean.

I plan on doing something very similar. I have tube fenders tho and I'm not sure I have room for two batteries there. I will have to take some measurements.

Your install looks great. Let us know how it works for you...

A top notch job, I installed the full benchmark system in mine, by myself, so by comparison mine looks like a bunch of NASA chimps were under my hood. One problem that I still haven't figured out how to fix is that little vacuum thing that dangles without an attachment since I removed the stock setup. Sorry for the less than technical terms, but I have no idea what that thing does other than reading a post that someone melted theirs and made the jeep stop working.
Great pictures!!

You will love that setup. I have had the identical setup for almost three years. I've jump started myself twice and the system works great. I should upgrade to the newer style battery hold down. I told benchmark they needed a redesign and they finally did it. The new design looks nice.

I think I need a bigger truck!
VERY nice... gears are turning in my head right now....hmmm, how to stuff all that in an XJ?

Thank you Carolyn, it was an absolute pleasure working with you

Kurt, can that be done in a TJ? I have a 03 Rubi with AC, so the piping for the AC appears to get in the way. I have been looking at this for a while. And it seems to be possible, without the AC piping.

Sorry to ask in your thread Carolyn.

Kilby has a dual battery tray kit (designed for Optima Batteries but I will be checking to see if it will work w/ Odyssey/Die-Hard Platinums) with a replacement A/C line that moves the accumulator over toward the engine to provide sufficient space. I have the kit, but have not installed it yet.

No worries...... ask away..... I'm glad to have initiated this particular discussion..... and SUPER glad to have mine installed. But anxious to read other's take on the same... always trying to learn...

JD, hope that you will do a write up when you install yours. Could of used a duel set up yesterday when I went to start the Jeep and the battery was dead. It was sitting in -30 - 40 degrees for a few weeks though without getting moved.
