Glad I waited, this one seems to make the most sense so far: [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004M3BICU"]Amazon.com: XGPS150 Universal Bluetooth GPS Receiver for iPad, iPod touch, iPhone and other smartphones, tablets and laptops: Electronics[/ame]

Any bluetooth GPS can be used with a jailbroken iPhone/iPad. I really dont see how this one will work without jailbreaking as Apple doesn't support the bluetooth profile in iOS.

Looks like it is available for purchase on Amazon. I would volunteer to be the proto-tester here but I'm waiting to buy an ipad till the new version comes out.

I doubt they would advertise it as being compatible with Apple products if you have to jailbreak them. Maybe it comes with a driver you can load.

Haha, "Dual" is the brand of the GPS. I clicked on this thread thinking "How did someone get two GPSes talking to an iPad?".

The only chance it will work without jailbreaking is if Apple adds SPP bluetooth profiles in iOS 4.3. So far, they haven't. Here's Apples' list of supported bluetooth profiles, and as you see, SPP isn't among them.

Thanks for that insight. I've fired off an email to them via their support page asking what they mean about it being for Ipads referencing your comment about not having SPP support in the Ipad Bluetooth profiles and will let you know what they say in response.

Looks like I might be the beta tester here after all. I called the company and they said jailbreaking was not necessary, just install their application first. The review on Amazon substantiates this.

I waited for the Ipad 2, wasn't all that impressed, so I ordered a $350 refurb Wifi :wings:, and next I'll order this Dual GPS gadget. I'll let you know how it works in a week or two.

Good for you. (seriously)

I sent them an email and contacted them via their number the first time I heard about their gps and got absolutely ZERO response. Figured they didn't know the answer so they ignored my question. :coffee:

Decided right there and then to avoid a gps from an electronics company who's focus is not their gps business.

Well.... it works awesome with my ipod touch. No jailbreak necessary. It took 20 seconds to pair it via bluetooth, then it automatically prompted to download the companies free app, which shows your position on a Google earth map and satellite status. The Topo Maps app then recognized it right away. It seems to be a pretty sensitive receiver, as I managed to access a bunch of satellites standing inside the middle of my house, the first unit I have had to do so.

My ipad should be here soon, and I will let you know how it works with a newer Ios and on the road. I like the idea of having gps on both the ipad and the ipod, so I can take the later with me hiking and biking and still have my position on USGS quads.

Since you apparently have their ear as a Beta tester, can you ask them why they didn't respond to either of my queries? Like I said, I can't see having faith in a company if they can't respond with answers to basic questions like the ones I asked (see my earlier reply in this thread about my question).

As one who deals with customers for a living, it is a BIG pet peeve of mine when a customer is ignored.

good to hear that it works. I'm guessing that the needed bluetooth profile is located in their required app. Does it have to be running in the background at all times when you are using the GPS?

I've gotten out with it a little bit, but I haven't done an exhaustive test yet,. Accuracy wise, it's usually good for 32 feet + or -, which is probably good enough for most people, but I was hoping for better. I've heard some of the bluetooth gps sets that require jailbreaking have more accurate chips? I'm still glad I don't have to jailbreak os 4.3, which looks somewhat sketchy compared to earlier OS versions. The proprietary application did lock up once, but rebooting both the gps and the ipad fixed it right away.

The google maps only work within wifi coverage.
