20r intake ports are round and 22r are square when you look at the intake runners, should be able to tell for sure what you're currently running and blocks are stamped on the sides..the 20r head should get the 22r valves installed also during the build. 20r head does have a higher flow rate but the smaller valve size sort of makes it cancel out, this according to the machinist that built mine back in the day ...dual sidedrafts will add more noticeable power....they made the biggest difference for me...( I've had quite a few in 1st gen celicas and my 84 4x4 ended up with the hybrid). Weber over mikuni duals got better mpg....pain to keep them tuned....

I have had a few 22rs and 22re in my day. Like every else said 2rz or 3rz is the way to go.
However if you have the 22r and you want to run it, I had did a weber 36, desmog, header, efan swap. That really woke up the truck, still slow on hills. Did a cam later on, yea cool great not much out of it.
I got all in to the 22r/20r hybrid back in the day, but every time I ran the numbers I could do a 4.3 or 350 swap for not that much more so I never went down that road.

I had a 22R in my old '82 shortbox 4x4 that felt pretty peppy compared to my current 22RE in my '92 4runner (which has a cam, LCE header, etc..) but that might just be because of the weight difference. The one place the 22RE shines is in starting on hills, something my carbed 22R disliked at times. I do miss that little 82 though. solid truck

Having spent stupid amounts of money on 22R's years ago, I am firmly in the swap to a newer motor camp.

The best combo I had was 20r head that had the chambers welded up and reshaped to mimic the 22R's. It was then ported within an inch of it's life. I cut apart a couple old heads to get port wall thickness's. Bored 2MM over and would spin 8500. On the dyno it made 235hp on pump gas. I would not recomend something like that for a DD.

Side drafts are a pain. They make a couple more peak HP but are lacking every where else. The main limitation with a single 2 barrel is the intake. I made a custom sheetmetal intake with a Holley 500 2 barrel. It worked the best for overall drivability. Still no substitute for FI, especially with todays ethanol laced fuel.
