Early jeep?

I thought making an early Jeep into an "expedition vehicle" consisted of loading it up with gear and going somewhere... ;)

CJ5 Overlander

The CJ5 was the last true Jeep in my opinion, and I know I'll get a lot of crap for saying that, but as a XJ owner I see the spartan simplicity of the early CJs and admire them. JP Magazine listed it in their top 10 Jeeps of all time.

Stock they're easy to work on and with an overdrive they can manage highway speeds.

The CJ3B, the CJ5, and the CJ6 are in my opinion the glory days of Jeeps.

Just look at the CJ3B Page or EarlyCJ5.com for more

My dream Overlander would be a diesel CJ6 hardtop. The Diesel from Mercedes W123 is a damn tank (I've owned 2) and the nice thing is that they are so common everywhere you go

Good Luck!

IMO this is how i want to build a CJ5 for over landing. 8.25 rear end. HP D30 front. air lockers on both. either update it to a 99 4.0 aw4 np231 combo or go v8 and toss in a small block chevy. and i dont mean 350 when i say small block. something like a 305 or 283. or if you want to go the ford route a 302 or 347 stroker. or boss 302. not sure of the t-case options for this but i would go tremec t56 tranny. or t700. or again with the ford route a c5. 4" lift 33" tires. 4.56 gearing. obviously, its an older car. so clean up the interior. i would bedline it and put in an oem carpet kit. as well as use a product like the duplicolor undercoating for under the tub and clean up the frame, powdercoat etc. just for added longevity without worrying about rust. im from arizona so i never see rust and reading other peoples threads on jeepforum its kind of become a nightmare of mine...

if you go the hard top route i would put a cargo basket up top obviously. mount spare tire on the tail gate as well as 2 jerry cans. for extended trips to remote areas a couple more jerry cans in the cargo basket. as for a place for the gear i would invest in an m101 or m416 trailer. the usual, locking top the reverse spring deal so the axle is under them for more clearance tires and rims to match the cj's, roof top tent, mounting locations for shovels, axe, hatchet, fire extinguisher etc. as well as a place for recovery gear. winch bag (oh forgot. it would have a winch up front) thats just basically what i would do. or what i want to do at least...
