Eezi-Awn 1600 on Defender?

I'm trying to figure out if a model 1600 is too wide to fit opening to the rear of my 110? I have a hannibal roof rack, and the site says it's 55" wide. Paul at Equipt says the 1600 is 56-57" wide closed when mounted to open to the rear, so it sounds ok to me. His initial thoughts were it hangs off most vehicles though. would like to get a first hand experience and/or see a picture.

The 1600 is 63" wide if you mount it so it opens to the font or back of the vehicle. If you mount it so it opens to the side it's 48" wide

All the tent widths are meters:
1600 = 1.6 meters = 62.99"
1400 = 1.4 meters = 55.12"

55" is probably the complete width of the roof rack. To see if even the 1400 will fit, you want to measure the inside edge to inside railing of the roof rack. On my 130, I could only fit a 1200 between the rails.

Nathan,
Thanks! Did you ever get my email? When are you unvailing the new website travel section? Still waiting for details.

My Hannibal roof rack has removable rails like the Frontrunner, so it goes completely flat.

If the rack goes completely flat then I'd say the maximum width of the tent would be just inside the maximum width of the Land Rover.

I have heard a lot of complaints from experienced European overlanders (wetter climate, I suppose) about Hannibal's quality control, specifically poor stitching and their use of non pre-shrunk canvas on their tents which ends up preventing the tent from fully opening once weathered. Howling Moon and EziAwn have much better reputations.

As for size, 1400 should be fine for most situations sleeping two adults. 1200 may be a little cramped for two. 1600 would probably sleep three in moderate comfort. I had once been considering fitting a pair of 1400s, one opening forward and one aft, to my 109's Brownchurch rack - I think they'll just fit with only the front and rear rails removed as the space between the side rails is 1450mm.

I've got a 1400 on the back of my 110 - I can post a picture later if your interested. I just got back from a few nights camping with myself, pregnant wife, and tall three year old. It's getting tight with the three of us but for two - the 1400 is perfect....

That's been pretty much my experience with roof top tent quality too. Eezi-Awn seems to be tops for craftsmanship and materials. I've seen a couple of Howling Moons breakdown over time, but that was under pretty harsh conditions (rental vehicle in Southern Africa).

Sizewise, I think that a 1200 is OK for 2 adults, but the extra 8" (sorry .2 meters for you Brits) of sleeping room is nice to have.

Ha! I'm only 36, so of the "metric generation", but I find working in inches and feet much easier (untill things get very small, anyway) - for me, Imperial units are natural sizes, if that makes any sense, but metric units are hard to picture in the mind's eye or to estimate.

We had a 1600 opening over the back of our 110 (before advent of babies and dogs bought us back down to ground dwelling). Worked fine but sat on top of side rails on roof rack, not within them.

I have an ARB openning to the back of my 90.
The custom roof rack is 58" wide and viewed from the back the sides line up exactly above the NAS side roll cage.
The ARB tend mounted that way is 1.4 meter or 56", when mounted to the side the depth is 1.2 meters or 48".
