Emergency Room list

I am not sure which subforum to post this in, but this seems to be the catchall place.

As we were driving up US180 in New Mexico a couple of weeks ago, it struck me that if we needed an emergency room, or even some medical care, I would not know which way to go. I know it exists in Silver City, but we were a lot closer to Luna and Reserve. So I was wondering if there was a list of medical facilities I could print out and keep in the truck. Something that says things like:

Willcox, AZ, emergency room on Rex Allen Drive, south of I-10 at exit 340.

I am wondering if a vehicle mounted GPS with driving directions could help you with that? I always preplan (ok , sometimes preplan) a trip by at least getting the Search and Rescue #s' and or State Police #'s.of the area I'm going. ER's would be a good idea too. Oh ya, good luck getting cell service away from the interstate! I finanally got a SPOT devise to help with that.

You could try Google Maps or Microsoft Streets and Trips.
Most in-vehicle gps mapping systems should be able to tell you the closest to your current location.

In 2005 when driving across country from CT to AZ my wife Amy was 7.5 months pregnant. I used Microsoft Streets and Trips to plot out every emergency room, hospital and medical clinic on our route!

While it isn't a list, you can always look for this sign.
I've been delivering blood to hospitals all over the country and my first time into a new place, these signs are (quite literally) a lifesaver.

Having a list for a trip is a very good idea. When I get to the home computer I'll see what I can find. Please post any good search techniques work.

Automotive ADHD is fun!
This brings to mind a story that in retrospect was funny but could have been truly tragic.

When we were up in the mountains last, my dad started to get heavy chest pains. We drove 75 miles to what the TomTom said was the nearest ER and when we got there we found weeds growing in the sidewalks and an ambulance up on blocks! We found out later that one of my father's arteries was over 95% blocked and another over 75%. Two days later he was in surgery.

Oh, and there was one of those big blue H's pointing right to the closed hospital.

The factory nav system in my truck has the ability to show hospitals among its points of interest. It also has an "emergency" choice in its main menu. Select that and it offers a place name list showing the nearest medical providers, law enforcement, and fire stations. Choose one and it provides turn-by-turn driving directions. It also shows the facility's phone number and gives you the ability to call ahead via a blue tooth connection to your cellphone.

Haven't had to use it. Hope I don't need to. Would not completely trust it in a life-threatening situation. But a nice item to have in the toolbox.

I reckon most car-oriented aftermarket GPS units would offer something similar, no?

Planning

Of the many great things I learned from this site, one thing that sticks in my mind the most is a comment one of the contributers made about planning the trip and how that was as much fun as actually going. I've found that "The Next Exit" text is pretty handy for planning everything from where to eat on the trip, to where you can get medical aid. Although eateries come and go, generally, hospitals stay put for a while, so this text won't get old too fast. Sit down one night with your route in mind, pour over the maps, then check "The Next Exit" for hospitals and such and mark them on your map.

We thought of the same thing when we were leaving Dinosaur NM in Colorado. I just picked up a Garmin Nuvi 660 and sure enough it lists all the hospitals and ERs starting with the closest ones. Simply select the closest one and hit the GO button for directions.

Thanks for all your responses. We need to get another GPS, ours was stolen. I still like to have paper copies of things, hence my wanting a list. I keep an eye out for those blue hospital signs, but if that only works if you always backtrack. I would want to know if there is one on the road ahead.
