Engine Question, Please Help.

Hello,

I was referred over here from NPORA with my question regarding what I should do with my newly acquired 95 Mitsubishi Montero.

Here is the rundown from my post on NPORA:

"I work at a hotel that is the middle of a desert and it is not uncommon for people to break down while passing through on their way to L.A.

About a month ago a guy arrived at the hotel and told me his engine blew up in his truck while coming over the mountain pass on the other side of the river (Colorado River)- he had the truck towed to our parking lot and stayed a couple days trying to find a junker to come and pick it up to no avail ( it is an hour and a half to anywhere from where I live).

At the end of his stay he surprised me and gifted the truck to me, I had been admiring it, thinking about what I would do with it (mainly what I could take off of it and put on my Pathy)-

It is a 1995 Mistubishi Montero, complete with mudding tires, Con-Ferr Porthole Roof Rack and an ARB bumper. I've been scratching my head now for a while about what I can port over to my Pathfinder- thus far I have only taken the rack off as it was the easiest and most straightforward thing.

In short- what would you do in this situation?

The engine definitely has a broken piston and a rebuild would be too expensive. I am pretty sure the radiator is shot as well as it has copious amounts of oil in it. "

I am trying to find an engine to fix this thing up- what year engine will fit in it? Any wisdom would be appreciated.

head over to 4x4wire mitsubishi forum. Im sure you can find what you need there. Im sure somebody will want your arb bumper Many helpful hands there though.

If thats an SR it should have a locker too......3.5 motor. I dunno though, If I have questions I ask Offroader or RX(Russell) or head on over to other forum. That motor is abundant

engine is the 3.5 l DOHC. Only one that works with the ecu and wiring harness. Swapping in a different engine would also require swapping in a full harness and ecu along with all the ancillaries. Not worth swapping in something else IMHO.
IIWY, I'd figure out if the engine's seized up, has a blown head gasket, or just has some simple issues.

If its toast, you can prob. find an inexpensive used engines on car-part.com.

Basic Montero Info...
Rear locker comes standard from the factory along with 9.5" rear diff and 8.5" front diff for the 94-97(98?) SR's.
Engine is a 3.5l DOHC (interference engine) with 214 hp @ 228 ft-lbs torque.
This rig would be a significant upgrade from a stock pathfinder of any vintage IMHO but I'm a bit biased. It does have a significantly stronger drivetrain made to compete with the Nissan Patrol's (sold overseas) land cruisers, etc.

I'd fix it. Lack of maintenance most likely caused this breakdown. These are great rigs. Hell, I'd even sell the Pathfinder if I needed money for parts

Thanks for the info guys- I am searching for an engine but I am on an extremely tight budget. My Pathfinder is my daily driver and I like it a lot. In the event I cannot find an engine for this thing I would want to sell the whole thing. More pictures:
