Exhaust Gas Temperature ?

Hi Everyone, I'm at the starting end of a Fuso camper build. My truck is a 2003 FG 5 spd.

The previous owner installed an aftermarket boost gauge and EGT / pyrometer which seems like a good idea. The thermocouple is located in the exhaust manifold between the first and second cylinders. So far I have been careful to avoid exceeding 1200F, but brief spikes a little hotter have happened.

My question is about the safe upper limit temperature.

I have googled around without finding any clear answer and am hoping the group can help guide me. I previously owned a Cummins 5.9l and the stories about melted pistons left an impression on me......

Thanks :)

I’d start worrying around 1250. Curious as to the conditions in which you saw the spikes. I’m flying blind.

The EGT rises with boost and load. Long hills at highway speeds see the temps climb from cruising at around 900 F. If I keep my foot down the gasses keep increasing. I have been watching for it and basically just surrender the speed to cool down. I guess this is why Fusos only do 35 mph up hill.... lol
