Spotted in a parking lot in Waikiki in early December.
Can anyone suggest routes and/or locations for overland camping on Oahu? I've read about a couple of tour companies, but no land that is open to the public.

I've camped out on Bellows beach (military ID req). I've also camped out near Ka'ena State Park, but nothing that any of the forum users would call "overlanding". I mean I've gone out to Kahuku and went dirt biking and decided to camp there instead of do the drive back, or go out to Hale'iwa the night before to get some morning waves, but thats about it. Honestly you could do a bit of overlanding on the Big Island, but even then you are no more than an hour from civilization. You can get some serious offroading at Peacock Flats or at Sand Island, but that is about it unless you make your way to Maui.

I think Oahu is pretty limited. I also camped on Kaneohe, but need Military ID as well. There used to be a little offloading at Kaena Point, but people were being irresponsible and the police started cracking down. Here's a few pics, sorry for the Cruiser content :ylsmoke:

The The Big Island, Maui and Kauai are better for "overlanding" type activities. When they used to run the Super Ferry we drove our car aboard and did some camping in Maui. It was a great time, but didn't have the cruiser at the time. A Saab and Prius getting it done!

Looks like we go around the same area...

Ka'ena Point is still open, but they extended the nature reserve a bit since I have been here. You can no long making it around back to Farrington Hwy on the west side. They did shut it down again for a while for a clean up because of people were putting nails and stuff in some of the wheel rutts and then of course there was this:

... and that lead to it being shut down for a few months. There was also a Mercedes that met the same fate which I can't seem to find the pictures of right now.

The super ferry was only shut down a few years ago if I remember correctly, but you can still get your vehicles to the other [non outer] Islands. I did it once to get my disco to the Big Island to go to the Keck Observatories. Its prohibitively expensive to do more than a few times, unlike the ferry.

I've been back on the mainland for about 4 years... I'm not surprised about what's been going on out there.
