Ext idle switch on a TJ

I've got an extended idle switch on my cherokee. They were available on police vehicles to bump the idle to 1000 rpm to help run the AC and power accessories. It is wired to the PCM and will only raise the idle when in park or neutral. I use it whenever I use my winch, or leave my jeep sitting at idle for a while. It is the switch to the far right on my switch panel.

A friend with a TJ noticed it and is wanting to fit one in his jeep. His TJ has a manual transmission, would 1000 rpm be enough to use in place of a hand throttle? Could you wire it in with the wire that senses the air conditioning compressor running, as the TJ doesn't have the stock wires for the ext idle switch? The switch looks the same as the TJ switches. Has anyone tried this?

Sorry for the highjack. I guess slightly on topic. I just received my idle switch and 4 opening bezel for my Cherokee. Just need to find time to install.

I noticed your HVAC control knobs. Are those the ones listed in JP magazine, that are polished and have a blue dot for indicate where they are positioned? Don't have the mag in front of me but I recall them being for Wranglers but they looked like they would work on 97+ XJ's.

Thanks for any info. :26_7_2:

They are the stock AC control knobs. I masked off the clear spot where the light glows through and painted them to match my jeep, along with the the center dash bezel and a bunch of other stuff. I think they look quite a bit better than the aluminum ones. It was pretty easy to do.

Just got to thinking...

If I were to do it again and wasn't in the middle of painting a bunch of other stuff for my jeep, I would just paint them with Krylon Fusion paint. I've got a spare set of knobs and may try painting them another color just for the heck of it.

prepmech, did the panel come with the power outlets or did you add....if so, where did you find the outlets at ? I need to add a couple to the XJ front and rear and a couple to the Dodge . Thanks
