Extended warranty for $2,000?

I just bought a new toy hauler made by Coachman (Forest River). It's a 17' and I paid $20,000 for it. Should I go for the extended warranty?

Tough call but knowing the lack of build quality in this industry I would get the warranty.

If you are capable of doing repairs yourself I wouldn't bother with it. Yes, build quality is generally poor on most RV's but there's nothing all that complicated about them. Also be aware that in season most RV service departments are swamped and even for little repairs it may take weeks to get an appointment. If that repair is for something that keeps you from using the camper but is within your abilities to fix you are often better off just fixing it yourself.

Some dealers/service departments are better than others, so check reviews for your dealer and see what service times look like.

If you are not handy and capable of making most repairs yourself then consider it. Our local RV dealer's shop rate is $190 an hour. That would add up quick if you need repairs done. Of course, read the fine print and make sure you know what is and isn't covered.

gulp! I think the audi dealer is only 120$

A buddy works for a motorcoach dealer/service center that caters to the nascar crowd. Their starting rate for motor, electrical is $175/hr. This is on 1.2 mil dollar rv's so it's just pocket change really.

Spend $2,000 so you can wait 6 months for a shoddy repair job from some hack RV mechanic? (who isn't worth $10 an hour let alone $175)

Put the money in the bank and fix any problems yourself, the repair will be better and you'll learn all about your trailer.

Your right. I ended up passing on the warranty and spent the money on a new inverter generator.
