F550 DRW to SRW Conversion Question

Here's the background. While looking for an F250 or F350 7.3l truck, I came across a 2000 F550 for a decent price. Truck has 101,000 miles, 4x4, 6 spd manual transmission with GearVendors overdrive/splitter, Lariat interior, flat bed with boxes, full Banks kit, etc. It does have DRW and the flat bed is wider than the cab body (not favorable but considerable for the rest of the package).

SRW is highly preferred for better tracking, better off-roading, etc. I have read about the other F550 builds here and checked out the Michelin and Continental super single tires. They do look awesome and would be cool to see on the truck. I see there is a rim and spacer kit to run the super single tires. However to do this conversion, the rims and tires alone cost thousands of dollars, not including the lift. Is there another spacer kit and rim combination that would allow me to run 17" or so rims, or a non-super single set up? A rim and tire combination typical to find on a lifted F250 or F350?

I completely understand that dropping rim and tire combos will negate the haul/tow capacity of the F550. I am fine with that as all I would be towing is a 26' to 28' travel trailer. In the short term, I could readily lose the full haul/tow capacity of the F550 to be able to afford getting into a SRW set up.

The Michelin and Continental would look terrific on the truck. But that is more realistic of a future goal.

Please help me out with information regarding SRW conversion without the super singles. I understand a F250 or F350 is a better truck for my needs. I also understand that I would be giving up the haul/tow capacity of the truck and would then be limited to the weight rating on the smaller tires. In evaluating if the F550 deal is worth it, I am interested in SRW conversion alternatives and checking on less costly alternative availability.

Thanks.

Unfortunately because of the size of the brakes, you are unable to run a wheel smaller than 19.5". There really aren't any options that are cheaper than the full set of wheels and tires (super singles) that I know of.

You have either a Dana 135 or 110, depending on the year model. They didn't make either of those axles in SRW configurations because it would defeat the purpose. I've seen SRW conversions on them, but would imagine it would be costly since they have a larger 8-lug bolt pattern than the standard F250/F350 pattern. I think Earth Roamer did a SRW conversion recently, maybe contact them?

Swapping a F250/350 Sterling or Dana 80 axle would also defeat the purpose of an F550, plus you'd have to relocate the spring pads on the axle to line up with the F550 leafs, among other modifications.

I'd imagine your best bet would be to run super singles when you want to hit the trails, and bolt your dually wheels back on for the street. Atleast that'd be cheapest and simplest option. Either that or sell the F550 and downsize to an F250 or F350 SRW.

I think your options are limited to the above. The conversion to the Rickson's is probably the most cost effective, but still expensive.

Measure the wheel mating face on the rear, then pull the front spacers ( unless its a super 60) and measure the front axle. There are a ton of aftermarket wheel companies that will make a 20 inch wheel with the correct bolt pattern and offset to fit. But it will only work if your axles come fairly close in widths.

I converted my drw to srw. I kept the DRW D80 out back, and went just pulled the spacers off the front axle. rear axle was about 3.6 inches wider than the front. Got a newer (2008) axle and they are almost identical. ( I was running a goeske spacer for a bit, but wanted the better turning of the new axle.

I love the 450-550 set up. I wish my DRW CC/CC 7.3 F350 was a 550. Get the Ricksons. They may have an issue with you running singles because it will drop the legal GVW. Just tell them you will buy the 265 19.5's they have a heavier rating and i BELIEVE that will satisfy their concerns.

Yes, 19.5's are expensive but I love them, have had two 550's still have a V10 4x4 "log grabber" and personal plow truck. I will converting my 350 to 19.3 singles VERY soon. Lead times are 2-3 months for custom orders. I definitely want ALL my rims the same offset so I can rotate wheels. I need to figure out spacer issues. Also, I will be narrowing the bed and running an M-105 army trailer tarp on it once I build my flipdown sides.

Thank you all for responses and suggestions. I have been reading them all as they come in. I have admired some of your builds and that is where I became familiar with Ricksons. The Ricksons with MPT would look great. The costs add up quick. Spare alone is $700-$800 plus. I guess the adage is true, it costs to play with the big toys.

I would stay DRW and get the nicest, largest Mich tires I could find.
I'd get these:

The XZL's are supposed to clean out mud quite well.

Swing by your nearest Rural Fire Dept. If you spot any F550's go in and see what tires they run. Fire dept's often have nice larger tires and wheels on thier F550 trucks. And those things do fair enough off road.

Wanna trade for a F250 straight up? LOLz.

Don't under-estimate what a F550 with the right tires can do. You might not need to mod the truck much at all. And Detroit deos make a locker for the F550 rear axle last time I checked. And I think it drops right in! Not a harder to install full case locker, because the F550 carrier is allready huge. Good Mich tires + rear Detroit locker = win. As far as I'm concerned. And you'll still have twice the towing capacity of my F250.

The idea to look at what your fire dept may be using is a good one. If you follow this link, it is a collection of "brush trucks" on Flickr. You should be able to view the pics without being a member. Scan through them and you'll find something you like. There isn't much on details but you could get some great ideas.

I have a Detroit locker and 3:91's I bought for my 2000 F-550 when I got it at 120K, I sold it (at 200k ) and bought a 2000 F-550 V10 4x4 and kept them to use in that rig, but after opening up the rearend found it already had a Tru-Track, I decided not to use them, soooo if you or anyone else wants them I will sell them at half current replacement.
