Factory Alarm Issues/Replacement?

So on my '99 Monty I've had some random intermittent issues with the factory alarm. I've only owned it for about a month now and do not have the key fob and within the first week it chirped once when starting but didn't give me any starting issues. Last night after locking it as I normally would with the button near the window switches everything seemed fine until a few minutes later when I unlocked it with the key from the passenger door the alarm started going off. This is the first time this has happened and I was hesitant if it even worked until now but after pressing the red led button on the left of the dash it started fine and hasn't acted up since. I've done some searching and am going to either remove the alarm from the tutorial by jlocster or keep it if it is worth it or an easy fix, depending on what responses I get.

If I do remove it does anyone know of a remote start/lock combo that would be worth installing in place? I'm not set on installing something else just looking at different options, thanks!

Thats not a factory alarm. That is a cheese ball aftermarket alarm, a hold out from the 1980's. Just need to rip that garbage out. I would not add another alarm, not worth being stranded.

Literally every gen2.5 i've seen has that led button. I find it a bit unlikely that ever gen2.5 i've seen has a cheeseball 80s alarm. :p

Haha alright, I'll remove it then! I noticed in jlocster's write up that you have to connect the starter interrupt wires together in order for it to start and that he also mentions it being an ideal place to wire in a kill switch. Am I understanding it right that I could put in a simple toggle switch there to use as a kill switch? Something similar to this and mount it hidden under the dash: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002ZPBRA?keywords=toggle switch&qid=1456679503&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1

Thanks for the responses!

One more question, should I unhook the battery when removing the alarm system? Just wanting to make sure I'm not going to screw anything up while doing this!
