Fall Desert Season...It Begins

Every year, I wait and monitor the weather forecast to plan my first escape down to the deserts of southern Utah. This time usually comes towards the end of September or early October. It's all about the temperatures...When will it cool? My family and I were surprised when we saw the temperatures for this past Labor Day were in the low 70s. It was time.

My friend, Craig, has a brother who has a home in Escalante and invited us down. This small town sits in south-central Utah and is still for the most part, small. Yes, it has its tourist season but usually people are just traveling through on their way along beautiful Highway 12. No, this is not the next Moab, at least not now, but it is the gateway to the Grand Staircase Monument with 1.9 million acres to explore.

The weather was stunning. But, storm clouds were in the air!

We were hiking and noticed that rain was in the distance. An hour later, the canyon was flowing. It was awesome to see the canyon flash. A desert secret that was shown to us for a precious time.

We took off our shoes and cautiously proceeded. Awesome!

I have learned that when rain is in the forecast, don't be afraid to head to the desert. It's just crazy dramatic!

As the skies cleared, we entered some slots. So fun...So dramatic.

Lilly climbing and exploring...fun!

The girls grabbed a snack and enjoyed the beauty of canyon country.

We made our way back to the trailhead just in time for the sprinkles to fall from the sky once again. Time to explore some other place.

Thanks for posting your photos. I am thinking about Comb Ridge in Dec, hope not too cold.

THANKS...IT COULD BE GREAT! ALL ABOUT THE WEATHER, RIGHT? IT WAS KILLER A FEW YEARS AGO WHEN I WAS THERE BEFORE CHRISTMAS. MIGHT HEAD THAT WAY TOO IF WE DON'T GET ANY SNOW SOMETIME SOON:(

The weather clearned up again as we made our way over to an old settlement in the caves below Fifty Mile Mountain. The Hole in the Rock Road is definitely a history lesson along the way...These caves were created by two brothers who were mining in the area. We pondered their lives as we walked around their dwellings.

This car had seen better days. But, oh what a setting!

Some of things the brothers used are still left in the caves to this day. They carved and blew out three awesome rooms. They were clean! A nice place to throw down a bed roll...

The girls inspecting "the goods" of the cave. The Utah desert is full of many secret mines and homesteads. It was fun to explore this one on this day...

Time was against us, so we headed back to Escalante and our friend's house. Storm clouds were on the horizon once again. Oh boy!

The wagon tracks of the pioneers that traveled this route over a 150 years ago can still be seen in places. History...The Hole in the Rock Expedition was to settle in the southeastern corner of the state for the Mormom church. Their six month trip was crazy wild...

The light show happened on our way back. And so to, the flash flood. It was awesome!

Louise marveling at Mother Nature's work. It was a stellar evening!

The Escalante area is full of surprises. The Boulder Mountains are just outside of town but 5-6,000 feet higher. An alpine environment in the middle of the desert. Up we went...

Lakes everywhere...

Louise used to be a guide, so her roll cast was graceful in spite of the wind.

Lilly ready for action.

We fished and hiked in the cooler weather. Jackets were needed but the views were tremendous! The following day, we headed home through the desert. We stopped to check out this beautiful rock art panel. Outstanding!

Louise made a quick lunch for us before we headed into Bryce.

Bryce is full of Eye Candy. We enjoyed our lunch and walked the rim for some killer views. We were all dreading the ride home. Oh, well...

Until next time...
