Family of five driving the world... but in what?

Definitely agree no need to do the turtle routine in places where a whole family can travel well on $100 a day.

trying to clear customs with a foreign vehicle at so many borders would be an insurmountable challenge.
Definitely not insurmountable, but certainly more trouble than it would be worth to most people.

That danger warning can be way overblown, basically don't listen to any non-locals about the issue unless they have in-depth personal experience.

I've raised many kids in 3rd-world areas many considered "too dangerous" at the time, never lost a one. You just need local knowledge and to keep your wits about you.

Take all the risks out of life, you take all the life out of life.

Yes, I agree there are areas that I would need to fly over (and ship the truck) to bypass high risk region.
Family I know who recently cam from a RTW trip did so. Or find some drive around... Surly I´m not taking any change.

Its a good idea to split the trip up and use diffrent kind of method, had not thought of that before. Thanks!

An expedition vehicle full of western tourists would stand out like a beacon in El Salvador, Honduras or Venezuela, attracting all sorts of opportunists. When you stop for gas or go into a grocery store you will be met by a guard carrying a rifle or shotgun. They are not there for your protection. You will drive through many military roadblocks, they are also not there for your protection. You would need to find a gated area with security every night for your vehicle or you would most definitely have visitors. You will likely have people following you waiting for an opportunity to take something. The only way I would travel in that region is with a reputable local driver in a local vehicle and staying at hotels with security. Neither of which is expensive to western standards.

If you would like more specific sources of my information, PM me and I will respond privately.

Edit: I apologize if my post comes across as confrontational. Everyone on this forum seems friendly and well intentioned. No offense intended

Yes I think I would start in the US... that might be a soft start.. since I´ll always be close to a desent store and could master things. Good selections on good price.

To give you an idea of where we would like to be able to access... this route from The Greatn Indian Road Trip has been an inspiration. (skip skandinavia and most of Western Europe)
