Fiberglass, round point, short shovel

One of the things I assumed would be no trouble at all to find, and turned out to be impossible to find was a fiberglass handle, round point, short shovel.

I checked all the usual suspects: Lowes, Home Depot and the local Ace, True Value retail outlets. I also checked retail and professional landscaping supply and Farm & Fleet type retail outlets. Nada.

Just short of it becoming a quest we needed to get going so I strapped a wooden handled one into the rig we and took off.

I finally saw a fiberglass one at retail the other day at an Englund Marine and Industrial Sales location in Astoria, Oregon. http://www.englundmarine.com/

I found mine at, of all places, Wal-Mart. Now should even be the perfect time as they are clearing out the summer stuff.

One thing people tend to overlook is the angle between the shovel blade and the handle. Most standard digging shovels tend to have a large angle. This does not work well at all if you are trying to remove dirt or mud from under a vehicle (great for digging a hole though). A shovel with a blade close to inline with the handle is what works in the close space under a vehicle.

Good luck in your searches.

Another option is to buy a longer one, drill out the rivet for the grip handle and remove it, cut the fiberglass to the desired length, and replace the grip handle.

Home Depot used to carry the right kind as I bought two a few years ago and could swear I still have seen them there recently

Found one just last weekend to replace my splintered up, sun baked wooden handled shovel. The wood had shunk enough to make the shovel a bit loose to boot.

One trick I learned years ago from my FS Hot Shot buddies is sharpening the sides of the shovel. In this case, I only sharpened one side - and if needed in can serve as a small brush cutter, yet be relatively safe to store with the normal side up.

Probably silly priced, but like TeriAnn mentions above a shallow angle between the handle and blade of the shovel makes digging under a stuck vehicle easier ...

I have an old version of this new shovel that stays out of the weather unless its being used. I've wiped the wooden handle with mineral oil over the years and it's stayed in good shape.

...Any idea how the fiberglass is gonna hold up vs. all day every day sunshine if it's exterior mounted?

We have three dogs - the "official pooper scooper" has been outside for 12 years in AZ sun. The yellow colored handle is bleached some, but the head is still on solid, the handle is still up to any task.
