first jeep: the beginning of a JK build

got my first jeep 2 weeks ago. 2008 sahara steel blue.

so far i have put 5,000 miles on it on trips to WV and NC for snowboarding. slept in it for a night both times. i do abunch of mountain biking, rock climbing, kayaking, backpacking. pretty much anything that gets me outside and away from concrete. so im gonna be building this jeep to get me places to do these things as well as be a mobile base camp. it wont be as hardcore as some of the rigs on here but im a college student and will be building it on a college students budget. in the end (if there is ever an end) i would like to be able to stay out for around 2 weeks completely self supported and be somewhat comfortable.

i got a 77 scout II for my 13th birthday by the time i was 15 i had rebuilt the engine transmision tcase and regeared the axels. so im pretty good at finding my way around a shop and have a pretty good idea on what i want.

on to the jeep...
so far all i have done is mocked up some lights on the front bumper. which will soon be chopped and a winch plate for an old warn 8274 will be put on. and this morning my first real mod was done to the jeep with the help of Michael (The Swiss). we put on a kargo master congo cage. it will be the base for extra lights, storage, and most importantly transporting my yaks or canoe.

i traded in a 07 chevy silverado for the jeep.

and before i get any comments about daddy buying me the truck, i got a full ride to college through scholarships i earned and used my college fund that my grandad left me to buy the truck. i just wanted something alittle smaller and better on gas mileage... and its a JEEP :wings::smiley_drive:

Congrats on you Jeep. I also have an '08 Unlimited and I love it. Good luck building it up the way you want it.

There are also some great JK forums to get more JK specific info

Hi,
I'm starting my JK build soon too. I was looking at the Kargo Master Congo Cage for my 2 sea kayaks - how is the wind noise and is it fairly rigid? I have a kayak trailer that I pull behind but it's not ideal for all occasions and trying to take it on anything other than a graded dirt road would not be smart.

BTW, I would be happy if my daughter only used enough of her college fund for a car - way cheaper than what I am facing in the next couple years - Good for you!

i dont think the wind noise is as bad as some people say, but i will probably still wrap the front hoop in rope to help it some.

it is extremely rigid moreso than i was expecting. there is no flex in it all- in shook the entire jeep when i was standing on it. it says it will hold 500 lbs.. but i would not hesitate to put way more than that on it

How difficult is it to take on and off? On their website it looks like you could store it in 3 sections? I would use it mostly in the summer but not at all once the snow starts. Other than the windshield attachment does it bolt to the body at all (any holes to drill)? It looks like it uses a bracket to mount to the rear of the frame rails?

no holes to drill it mounts to the frame where the rear bumper mounts. one of the reasons it is so stout.

the joints on mine are siliconed together but it is very easy to take off. kinda bulky to store. im just gonna leave mine on the jeep all the time.

There's no limit to the modifications you can make to it, all it takes is--
