So how do you compare the Runner to your old Taco?

Very similar in most respects. There were a few rock shelves and with tires approximately the same size (about 32") I didn't have any problems.

The shorter length of the 4runner was noticeable when backing or turning. That is a really nice difference! I think my Taco was at least 2' longer and had at least a 1' longer wheelbase. So I've had a reduction in both wheelbase, overall length and rear overhang.

There were several places where I was able to turn around very easily with the 4runner where I would have had to back-and-fill on the Tacoma. Having to back-and-fill + manual transmission meant turning around in a tight space was a bit of a PITA with the pickup.

I've never owned a 4x4 with an automatic (my only automatic before this was in a Subaru Outback Wagon) so there was no comparison. The automatic was nice because I didn't have to think about shifting, and could concentrate on driving. However, I did have to ride the brake down the steep hills.

The other difference was the locking diff. I only used it in the mud pit (definitely didn't want to get stuck there) but it seemed to work great.

The only other differences were those inherent to the platform (SUV vs Pickup.) Much more "protected" storage, puppy was able to sit on the back seat and hang her head out the window, which she loved. Power windows were convenient and the rear wiper came in handy after my mud bath.

Overall I'd say that now that I'm a family man (with a wife and dog ) and not doing a lot of "truck camping", the SUV is a better platform for me overall than the pickup was. I think pickups are great for single people but once you start acquiring family, the inconveniences start piling up.
