FJ Roof Rack Question

I am considering the purchase of a new FJ but have a bit of a concern about the factory roof rack.

The 2011 specs show the FJ without the rack is 6' high and with the factory rack is 6'7" high.

While 6'7" isn't a problem for getting into and out of my garage it does cause some concern on my under-ground parking at work which has a stated maximum height of 6'6".

The base model FJ comes without the rack but the one I want is the Adventure package which has the rack as standard.

So my question is:

Is it feasible to remove the rack and store it when I am in urban commuter mode and then to re-install it whenever it is time to go exploring? If this is a possibility how do I cover up and/or plug all the holes that will be in the roof where the rack attaches?

Maybe there is another solution out there I am unaware of?

Any input is appreciated. Thanks. :smiley_drive:

When you remove the rack, you re-insert the bolts into the holes. There are little plastic inserts that then cover the bolts. If your FJC comes with the rack, you'll probably have to buy the plastic inserts separatly.

hey,

I just purchased an FJ and bought one without the rack because I wanted the Baja Rack utility which is adds 4.5 inches instead. It is a nicer rack as well. However if you wanted to go that route where you get the factory rack and take it off, you can but you will have to purchase the kit. I'm not affiliated in any way.

It will be a big pain to take it on and off. I am just giving you friendly advice. I'd go for the lower profile rack.

You made a great choice, keep all of your oem bolts and caps and your set. Sergio has done a great job with BajaRack!

BajaRack is the way to go.
The two flat racks they offer (like the one above and my model for the Maggiolina roof top tents) sits very low to the roof.

x2 on what Weezerbot said. I have a regular Baja expedition rack and it adds an extra 7" to your height. Mine measures 6'8" from the ground, but I have a 2 1/2" OME lift. Take a friend and see if you can fit into the parking garage. If you have to remove it, two people can remove/reinstall it about 30 minutes.
