FJ60 axle

Is this a good axle? Good deal?

82' toyota FJ60 solid front axle....everything is exactly the same as the 79'-85' toyota pickup axle, but with the FJ axle, you dont need spacers for a conversion. the third member is the stronger 9.5" ring gear, and has stronger inner and outer axle shafts......it already has vented rotors and calipers...Axle is complete from hub to hub. theres no missing parts.

asking $260/firm

Are you buying or selling?

Based on the price alone, thats a fair deal. The FJ60 axle is a great housing, good internal components and the larger LC knuckles. If wouldn't be a direct swap with a minitruck or 4Runner though, spring pads are in an SUA configuration and the widths are different. They can and have been used in front axle setups on mini-trucks and SAS Tacomas, etc. All of the latest upgrades (birfs, shafts, knuckles, hi-steer, etc) are available for them.

Depends on what you are putting it in. The 60 axle is good by itself up to 33-35 inch tires. If you add 33's and a locker you might want to look at upgrading the birfields to longfields or something similar. If you add 35's and a locker you will want to look at some upgrades. The cool thing about them is they are really strong for expo wheeling with an open diff and 31-33's. The third member is also removable and can be swapped with third members from some FJ40's and all FJ 60 or 62's. The fj60 has 3.73 gears and the FJ62 has 4.10. The removable 3rd member also makes working on it much easier.

I would say that's a good price. Check the knuckle seals, when they go bad they leak like no other.

If both axles are Toyota the thirds can also be swapped front to rear. Which is handy if you break a pinion gear.

Unless you know the history of the axle it would be a good idea to service the knuckles and replace the seals even if they look good. Marlin has a new heavy duty seal that is suppose to be the shizzel. The whole service kit with Marlins super seals is $95, I just happen to have one sitting on my desk.

Also remember that while it has the stronger Land Cruiser ring and pinion, the ratio is 3.70:1, so that would have to match what ever you are swapping it in to.

AN FJ62 axle is even stronger, comes with a more standard ratio (4.11:1) and has an extra gusset on the long side for added strength and nifty cool brake backing plates with air scoops for better cooling. For an off road rig, it is the most desirable of the Toyota housings in my opinion.

All the internal components are basically the same strength from 76-90, and the same strength as mini-truck 79-85. There are variation in lengths, so be aware not everything is exactly the same.

FJ62 axles

In my case I prefer the 373's, I hope the gear sets are interchangeable with the FJ60s. I just bought a set of '62 axles for my 60. I assumed that it came with 373s. Looks loke I'll be swapping gears.

BTW $250 sounds like a good price I paid $225 for a mini truck axle three years ago here in the states.

I would guess they are, I just had a set of 80 Series R&P* gears installed in my 1975 FJ40 rear diff. Toyota likes to recycle designs.

*(The ratio is slightly different 4.10:1 instead of 4.11:1 but not enough to make a difference.)

Just a slight correction (and I don't know why this frequent misquote bugs me)

FJ60s came with 3.70 gears. The Pinion has 10 teeth and the ring gear has 37. I think 3.73 is a Dana ratio, but I'm not sure. In the Cruiser world it's 3.70.
