FJ60 tuned for mpgs.

So a friend helped me patch up all the leaks, power steering and we retuned the 2F for better mileage. Well she jumped from 10 to 12 mpg but holy crap the old girl can't get out of her own way. I cruiser her at 60 mph most of the time, but I may have to rethink this better mpg thing.

You might try a rebuilt carb from Jim C. Since doing that, in normal tune, I get 14-15 on the highway if I go 65 in 5th gear.

I got to drive an HJ 60 the other day and was blown away by the non turbo charged Toyota diesel and the 5 speed. I want to do the Jim C it's just that right now my 60 is my DD and a new carb is $900.

After I missed out on the last INTI rack I started having fantasies about an AT trailer, not any more. :D

Pick up a used one and send it to Jim, when it comes back, pull off the existing carb and you have a spare or one to sell. It's been done before :sombrero:....

4 speed?

I'm really trying to block out thoughts of mpg's right now. But if fixing the power steering pump doesn't help, than I'm not sweating fixing mine! ;)

Fix it, the smog pump is $800. Yep, 4 speed and currently investigating the diesel swap legalities in CA. Rumor has it that someone has imported an Aussie diesel mechanic and their swap (motor and 5 speed) will be in the $10-15K out the door range. Waiting on some phone calls to be returned but thinking that CA will say it's illegal.

I should have thought of that. Am I the only FJ60 owner here that doesn't have a 5 speed???

The first gear on th H55 is super low but that diesel with 180,000km chirped the tires in 2nd and 3rd. :26_7_2:

The diesel is a great idea!

But! A well-tuned 2F should be in the high teens with MPG. Mine never dropped below 14mpg city.

The 5 speed will only help driveability and not do much for mpg. The 2H will fix your mpg problem...

Jonathan Ward at TLC in LA is putting 2.8L turbo diesels into 40's and 60's and seems to have a green light from the DCA referee. You might talk to him about a swap.

A lot cheaper IMO, to have the valves done, get the carb redone by JimC, and install an H55F five speed. In my 60 (with 5 speed) I regularly got 16-17 MPG.

I get in the high teens (17) with a four speed doing 60 - 65. Going 70 drops it down to 15 mpg on California gas. I get better gas mileage running on Oregon gas. :elkgrin: It would be cool to find out the friendly referees that o.k. diesel swaps for biodiesel or veggie oil use. Probably on a word of mouth system though. Rebuilding the carb obviously cheaper in the short run.

slower = better

I'm not a trained mech. What I know (and can do) is from breaking things, and learning as I go. That said, on my 60 (33 mt's, rack, lift) with 300,000 miles I get 13 mpg @ 70, 15@ 63, and 16.5 @ 55. Stock gearing, 4 speed, dirty carb, etc. ie - not optimal. My point...slow down...and by the way - it's free.

I'm coming in a little late on this but who is Jim C? What all does he do during the rebuild? In my stock 60 I get around 12 as well. I may look into getting my carb rebuilt if it'll help that much! Thats much better mpg than my FJ80 gets.
