I'm about to mod my brakes on my 1989 fj- the master cyl gave up in this cold weather-I know that there is a mod for the brakes with larger bore cyl- would love to get some input about the mod and the actual parts info.
thanks,
Izzy

Did the master go out while you were driving? I had an FJ60 that had the master give out on me while coming down a hill into an intersection with a red light, and lots of cars. The pedal went to the floor suddenly and I steered over the curb and sidwalk, through a bakery parking lot and out the other side, over another curb and sidewalk and back onto the road. It happened so fast that I didn't have time to pull the ebrake. Good god, I'd be happy never having to have that happen again. I had my pitman arm fall of while I was driving once too, that's another story though....

www.ih8mud.com or Pirate4x4.com yotatech.com will be the best places to get information.

My understanding is the 80 Master is probably a bolt on. I know that its a popular choice on my 4Runner when people go to bigger rotors and calipers and no modifications required to get it to work.

I think there is only one Caliper on the Fj62 where the trucks had a V6 and a 4cyl caliper.

Late model (2000 newer with 16 wheels) I think have a larger diameter rotor and calipers. Not sure what it would take to run it. You may not be able to run it without going to a 16 inch wheel.

Get some mini truck IFS calipers, somewhere late 80s/early 90s. Look for the ones with the heat sink-like fins. They are bolt-ons and great for the 80 master. You'll need to cut about 1/4" on either side of your dust shields to get them to fit- not a problem with a die grinder and cut-off wheel.

Great mod. Get a mini IFS master if you plan to do rear discs in the future. Larger bore than the 80, like 1-1/4" or so.

Thanks for the reply and great info!:clapsmile
I took the plunge already and installed the master of a 1990 pick up 4x4 w/v6-the bore measured only 1" but it was larger then the 7/8 original bore(who would have thunk the engineers of toyota did not think of that!?)
Anyway, the calipers are next this weekend
ESH-what is IFS?
