Flashback Friday! Climbing Mount Rainier in 2006

Excelsior!
The most enjoyable climb I had made happened to be my third time on Mount Rainier with a group of super strong and really fun climbers. I dug through my hard drives to post up these great photos from a smooth climb with friends. We all made our way to the Paradise visitor center on a Friday afternoon in July and launched ourselves up the snow and glaciers.

Full report is here http://suntothenorth.blogspot.com/2017/02/climbing-mount-rainier.html but let me cherry-pick some great photos for your enjoyment.

The Mountain-

Mount Rainier is an iconic 14,411-foot (4,392 m) composite volcano with a conical shape and is made up of numerous layers of hardened lava, tephra, pumice and ash. It is the highest point in the Cascade range and hosts more than 25 glaciers as well as waterfalls, meadows and old growth forest.

Awesome photos and trip! I plan to summit Rainier one day. I am working on all the state highpoints and so far I have completed 33 of them. Rainier is one of the most difficult on the list but I'm looking forward to it.

Freakin' awesome! Have you already hit up Shasta and other Left Coast peaks? I always wanted to get way down south to the Vinson Massif but as usual life took me in a more interesting direction.

If you can go to Rainier early in the season you might be able to shoot straight up the Ingraham Direct route. Not too long back some ranger did Rainier in one day. He took lots of risks but dang! That was stellar craziness!

Your sig line is absolutely right: "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do"

In the western part of the country I have done Borah in Idaho, Kings in Utah, Boundary in Nevada, Elbert in Colorado, Humpreys in Arizona, and Wheeler in New Mexico. I applied for a permit to climb Whitney in California for last summer but didn't get drawn (that's actually Mt Whitney in the background of my profile picture). I still drove by and camped near Whitney Portal on my way to Yosemite though.

For winter dates before May 1st no permit is needed. Having said that I was chased off the mountain twice by big snowstorms. I finally got a last minute 1 day permit and completed the up and back hike on a nice day in September
