Flippac : Winter , winds

I have few questions about the flippac . 1. Is this tent a four season tent ?
2. Can it with stand high winds / rain / snow conditions ? 3 . Can you order it to not stand so much from the rest of the truck ? 4. Is the roof strong enough to handle a foot of snow ?

1. NO, but you can get the rain cover that work great. It holds the heat in OK too. I tried sleeping in sub freezing and was comfortable.

2. Can it with stand high winds / rain / snow conditions ?
2. Winds, yes. No problem at all. Add the rain cover and you need to tie it down good, then no problem. Rain, no problem as long as you have the rain cover installed. Without the rain cover, you will get a little rain coming in but not to bad. Maybe none if the winds are not to bad. Drizzle, dew no problem. Snow, not sure on a heavy snowfall on the tent/rain cover combo. I would think it would melt off as long as you had the heat going. Otherwise the tent very strong and pulled taught like a drum when open.

4. Is the roof strong enough to handle a foot of snow ?
4.Snow loads closed, 1 foot was no problem for me this winter. Opening with a foot of snow…no way, you would have to push most of it off first.

And #3, no

what about strong wind 70-100mph? or more.. i have ridden out a tornado before in my ground tent and it's the only time it actually moved some.. all the other times it rode out like a champ without hardly a motion.. i did have trouble setting it up once with winds way over 80mph.. but heck, i had trouble opening the doors to my vehicle too. :D

Geez I bet! I think I'd be sleeping inside my truck at those wind speeds.

As to how the flippac handles in high wind VikingVince responded to this question in Mario's AT flippac thread. Guess it does ok, if noisy. I've only had mine out in ~40ish mph winds, and it did fine. Nerve wracking to flip closed, but no problems while it was open.

I would think that would be a very big deal for you.

I do not know anything as to if it will stand up too that sort of wind, perhaps if you ask the manufacurer... I do think, however, that it would be very scary, even dangerous to be trying to raise and lower the thing in that much wind. Could get yourself killed if it slammed down with you in the way, and that big you would never be able to move it against the wind. Maybe if you are perpendicular to the wind, but having it at all head on, or from the rear, very scary.

Plus, I think with the noise, I think I would just sleep with the thing closed up anyhow.
