My mistake, I meant the sightings of the Ivory-Billed in Arkansas. I hope you are right about the Imperial.

Well we are off for another canoe trip tomorrow. We are running the Wekiva river. The section is called the rock springs run it is only 9 of the 29 miles on this river but we only have the day and it is a 2 hour drive to get there so we will have to come back to finish this river. The river here is very narrow and the spring water makes it crystal clear. Great swimming and stuff. Not any limestone beds for fossil hunting but in the 90 degree heat it will be nice to cool of in the 72 degree water.

I have pics and GPS info from the alafia just haven't had time to get it uploaded. I will be tracking all that info for the entire trail system and posting it.

here is a link to info on the run.

Well last sunday we finished another 9 miles. This time on the wekiva river. There is a total of 29 miles on this river but we only had time to do the "rock springs run" We saw a fair amount of wildlife on the river. This time the bird of choice was the world famous limpkin. These guys are cool because when they used to film the old Tarzan show here in Florida they actually used recordings of limpkins to make the "jungle" sounds LOL. limpkin

The river is pretty nice although being just east of Orlando it has suffered alot of damage from last years hurricane season. all 4 of the storms that crossed florida crossed the river. Lots of debris although someone did a halfass job of clearing. It is a nice trip though, and I am looking forward to going back in 2 weeks and completing that river. Hopefully the 16th is the day.

I promise I will get some pics and info up of the rivers soon. My problem has been that my computer doesn't have a port for the SD card on the new DV camera and I havent bought one yet. I also have all the gps coordinates. Hell with all this paddling stuff I am going to have to open up my own info site. Maybe expeditionssouth.com LOL!

Sounds like a great idea. Collecting and passing knowledge is a real joy IMO, and helps to add another dimension to the hobby. As is said, when teaching others, it is really the teacher who learns the most...

I have discussed with my travel partners recently the idea of a long canoe/kayak trek. Likely in SW Arizona, though several routes in Southern Utah have great appeal to me.

You should consider the Texas Water Safari. Non stop race 260 miles. Only fresh water for shore assistance. It's a fantastic test of endurance. I ran it this year and will probably run it again next year.

Ahhh the Texas Water Safari. I have actually built a few solo canoes that have Been used in the race. We deisigned it, made a mold, and built it up at the Bell Canoe factory.

What I think is the funniest thing are the the flying fish at night. As you know they are attracted to the headlamps. One of the guys who bought a canoe from me actually got a broke nose from one of those fish hitting him in the face LOL!

I realize that I'm digging up a realllllly old thread here but ......

I'd like to know more about what you built for the tws (texas water safari). Sure, there are those that are making specific safari boats, but still it's all trial and error looking for the right design. I have some ideas in mind for what I'd want in a tws boat and for what I usually paddle ..... can it be one boat? I'd think so .... but I want to find out more about what others have designed and built in the past and how they did. Maybe even talk with the paddlers too?

I just came back from the tws, I followed it from the start and all the ways to the finish at seadrift, hitting all the check points along the way. I camped at the check points and ate fast food along the way while driving. Had me a cow bell to cheer on the paddlers and took a bunch of photos. I had a great time! Meeting all the support crews and Team Captains (TC) was fun as we would regroup at the various checkpoints. I plan on doing this race next year now that I've researched as much as I can, so now it's time to get ready! I already got myself a TC, and didn't even have to bribe him, or bend his arm or anything!
