Flushing coolent, what hoses and other stuff to replace?

Normally I do most of my own maintenance, but I’m taking my LC in to a dealer to have some minor stuff done to it that I just don’t have time to mess with right now, like a tranny and radiator flush. I was thinking, since the radiator will be empty, this would be a good time to replace certain radiator and heater hoses. I’m asking, because I’m fairly new to the LC and I’m not sure if there’s some hoses I can’t really see.

It only has ‘86K miles, but I’ll be traveling in some relatively remote areas this summer and I want 100% reliability, so I’m thinking I’ll have them do the PHH, and the main upper and lower hoses. Are there any other radiator/heater hoses I should have replaced at the same time? Should I do the thermostat too or are those a long lasting part?

How long do the water pumps usually last?

It’s a ’95 FZJ80, with 86,000 miles. Thanks much.

I think these questions are better for IH8mud.com

Personally, I would not bother changing ANY hoses, thermostat or water pump.

In 400,000km of driving my '82 BJ60 since 1989 I have had one radiator hose fail. I carry spare hoses, thermostat and water pump and I'll replace as needed. A new hose does NOT guarantee that it will not fail!

Miles are not the the concern...its age.

Hoses rot from the inside out in most cases. The acidity of the coolant accelerates this. Oils on the exterior also do them in pretty good.

Coolant is recommended to be changed every 2-4 years. I bet yours has NEVER been changed. If the coolant has been changed then you probably have some time left on the hoses.

I don't subscribe to the "change as needed" mentality. The time between shutting down in time and doing a HG change $300 is pretty short period of time. Then its always at an inconvient time...on the way to work in the rain in stop and go traffic when you are in dress clothes for a meeting 10 minutes after you normally get there. Or steep hill climb where it is unsafe to do the job and you are faced with drive it to safe point and risk major damage or endangering you life unnecessary with working on it in a dangerious position or having to do long winch outs. Preventative maintenance is where it's at.

Not knowing that motor but knowing 22RE and 7M and Toyota normal design characteristics, Toyota puts a couple hoses in really hard to get at places where they are very hot (under intake return lines on the 22RE and 7M that you cant even see) they tend to fail first. Look for those.

Me......I would be thinking about replacing them all and might even do the water pump just to make sure I didn't have to worry about it for a long while.

As for the dealer doing it: 22RE will eat up $120 in goodyear hoses from Autozone. I priced a couple of the hoses from the dealer that I was going to have to order for Autozone and they were pretty well 3 times the price as Autozone. I would fully expect to see $300-400 in parts cost from the dealer plus another $300 in labor plus what ever it costs if you do the water pump.

I'm a cheap bastard and I'd be saving the $400-450 and doing it myself and taking the lady out to a nice dinner with the savings. :punk03:

Thanks all for the comments. I forgot I posted this question.

The LC is really in good shape. PM by the prior owners has been so-so. I don't have any records from the first owner from 0-40Kish miles, but decent records from then on and most of the normal stuff was done as required. Coolant has been changed at least once as evidenced by an aftermarket hose clamp on the upper radiator hose and clean coolant.

I've changed all engine, diff, t-case and tranny, and brake fluids. The only thing left is new plugs, cap and rotor and possibly wires and then the coolant hoses.

I figured I would do a complete coolant flush before summer and in the process I might as well change all the hoses. In particular, the PHH hoses that are so hard reach.

I just don't want to find myself out in the middle of Eastern Oregon with a blown radiator hose..or more likely...a blown PHH hose.
