For the tacoma folks, how much lift need ped to run 255 85 16s without rubbing

There was a post not too long ago of someone who fit them with no lift. If I remember correctly he got a deal and was going to run the tires for a bit until he could get a lift. The 2nd gen taco guys can correct me if I am wrong but I think 2-2.5 with some pinch weld trimming would do it. I had 33 10.5 KM2s on my old 1st gen taco with 2" in the front and was able to fit them with some BFH hammer work on the pinch weld and a little cutting of the Tupperware bumper trim piece in the front.

There are a lot of guys running that tire size... look in the build threads for some inspiration on set-ups. Save yourself some money and do it right the first time. If you are going to start adding armor and a topper you may want to go a little more beefy right off the bat.

I have maybe 2" worth of lift in the front and they don't rub. Even when they vetted stuffed pretty good. Lookin at them it seems like they would work without a lift.

I vaguely remember someone running a similar size with no lift and minimal rubbing. 3" of lift will definitely clear your tires. 2" would probably, but I can't say for certain

255/85/16 Cooper S/T Maxx on my '10 AC with a 2" OME lift. I am running stock SR5 wheels too. The sidewalls clear the UCA by about 3/8". I do get just a bit of rubbing at full lock while backing up but it isn't bad and I haven't crawled under it yet to check where.

I really don't like wheel spacers but I am contemplating using 1/4" spacers all the way around just to give it a little wider stance without messing up the steering angles too much.

Lilbluerunner, where'd you find st maxx in that size? So far every place I've called do not show that size available yet.

I called the local Discount Tire. They do not show them online (Discounttireonline.com) in that size either. You will just have to call them and have them check availability. They did not have them in stock but did have them in a warehouse back east somewhere. Took about a week to ship them in after I made my order and put down a deposit. I haven't had a chance to test them out in deep snow yet but so far I really like them.

I ran 255/85 BFG muds(old style) on my 05 with no lift. They will take the mud flaps off if you don't. Aside from that they would only rub a little if you really stuffed them. The coopers ST are a smaller 255/85 so they should fit better. Now I am running a 255/75r17 with 1" lift and they rub on a very rare occasion. If you push the suspensions most tires bigger than stock experience minor rub but it is worth it in my opinion.

We ran BFG KM2 255/85/16s on stock suspension around town for a couple weeks before putting and OME suspension on....we removed mud flaps, and the front splash guard mud flap thing. No rubbing around town. As for off road I cannot say because we never went stock with the tires but if they rub on stock suspension they will rub while lifted under max compression in the same spot.

I ran Coopers first for a few years and had no problem with rubbing. The Toyo MT's that I have now rub when I'm turning and hit a bump just right. I have trimmed the plastic in the wheel well and it has helped but I think due to the Toyo's being a little taller and also the tire shop did the alignment to factory specs, that is what is causing the rubbing. The caster setting is more important that amount of lift to run 255's in my opinion.

You'd probably be alright with no lift with some combo of spacers, trimming, and bfh. 2" oughtta do nicely tho...

I ran the Maxxis 255/85s for a few years with no lift and very minimal rubbing. Oddly I'm now lifted on the same tires with adjustable UCA and I'm rubbing the frame at full lock worse than I ever did before. I'm sure that can be fixed with some adjustments in the control arms, I just have to figure out how.

There are a lot of people running this size tire on Tacomas. Some rub...some do not. Seems that each truck is just different enough from the factory that mild rubbing can occur...or not. Anyway, using the stock wheels seems to be the best bet to avoid rubbing. The farther the tire sticks out (wheels with incorrect offset/backspacing, and/or wheel spacers) makes the problem worse...on a full turn to either direction, a spacer pushes the tire closer to the inner fender well right at the inner edge of the front mudflap. Lift has nothing to do with whether or not you rub...unless you go with a long travel kit that has extended upper and lower control arms. A lift only changes your ride height which means you'll only rub when you flex the suspension more. Many people equate this to 'lift = more tire clearance'. If you only drive on the street and never flex your suspension, that may work for you but it's not technically correct. Your wheel still travels in the same arc up and down and turns the same amount.

Sometimes folks can change the wheel position slightly (push it forward) by adjusting the lower control arm. Adjustable UCA's (and most aftermarket uca's) seem to have some correction built in to account for the higher ride height of suspension lifts...taking advantage of that with your lower control arm can gain a small amount of clearance...or so I've read.
