Google, Microsoft and Yahoo are sponsoring Wi-Fi access in
many places around the country during the holidays. If
you're traveling, you may be able to take advantage of free
Wi-Fi in hotels and airports along the way.
In Google's case, they have partnered with Virgin America
to provide free Wi-Fi on Virgin flights and in the air terminals
served by Virgin. The list is here

Microsoft is paying for access to Wi-Fi installation in airports,
hotels and other hot spots nationwide. You are given free access
to WiFi if you perform at least one search using bing.com
(Bing is Microsoft's updated search engine. It used to be called Live.com.)
I'm not exactly sure how the "search-for-access" deal
works. JiWire maintains a web page to help you find a
WiFi hotsopt near you.
