45 or 60? Advantages of each? Disadvantages of each? ...me, wife, and 4 kids...:costumed-smiley-007

Steve,

I space was not an issue, I'd love a 60 Qt. fridge. That said, I've gone out for a week camping with what's inside my 45 Qt. fridge.
I guess if I had the 60, I would not have to cool 3 beer bottles at a time, but the whole 12 pack at once.

In our group 75% of people have an Engel/ARB fridge. With that kind of refrigerated space the possibilities are endless.

Whoa... I just read that the 60 quart was dc'd by ARB... looks like I may have to go with their 45qt and add the top extender piece.

Engle has a 60 liter and WAECO has a 50 and 80.

I just picked up the Waeco 52 quart - and for a family of four it should do well. I would take measurements of how and where you want to install it in the Rangie ... then buy the biggest one that will fit. For as many folks as you may be carting around, the bigger the better. (I say this as I'm on my third fridge - first a 30-quart drawer model, then a 35 quart and now this one.)

Ironically, my 52 quart is more efficient (on paper at least) than the 40 and 35-quart models. Waeco's 80 quart is also not as tall as the 52, so the dimensions really dance around among the models.

Steven, It's not so much about the size of your fridge, it's how you use it...

Hey... I've heard that somewhere before...:shakin:

Thanks for the input guys. Never thought of going with something other than the ARB. Is there a fridge review link here?

First time you look inside your new 45L fridge you'll exclaim "WOW. there is no room!" Considering less room for the usual ice you can really pack it. DesertGirl has become the master of layering your food in bags - Breakfast - lunch, dinner stuff - Easier to grab a complete bag than to dig for smaller items. it takes a bit of practice to get the system down. Set it to approx 1.5 and its good to go...

After reading the reviews in the OJ I decided to give the Waeco a try. I also went with the 50 ltr. I has about the same outside demensions as the Engel 45 but more interior room. It should be showing up in the next week or two, inside my new Chaser!!

I run an 84 qt Waeco on a slide in my KK trailer. Probably too big for in truck carry but in a trailer, it's great. :)

Storing food in Ziploc bags is the way to go. Meat, sauces, salads they all go in bags. The suff that needs colder temps goes at the bottom, like meats/sauces. While fresh leaf salads go on top. Using this method, 45 qt. is a lot of space.

If you stick to just carrying food, the 45 will work well for your family on shorter trips up to about a week, perhaps longer if you just pack things that will be added to dry/non-perishable stuffs to make the meals complete (i.e. meats, cheeses, etc). If you like to keep an assortment of beverages as well as a wide assortment of food, then I would recommend the 60. I can fill up a 60 for two people no problem. It becomes luxurious for two because you don't have to be so careful about how you pack it, or if you fill it half full with beverages. If you would like to read an in-depth review on a bunch of different units, I did one for the Summer issue 07 of Overland Journal. You can get the back-issue here.
