Front recovery point - attached to the same mounting as winch???

OK, perhaps I'm being a bit paranoid here...

Just finished up mounting a Warn M8000 into a TJM bumper on my '98 Tacoma.

The front recovery point on my Tacoma is bolted to the same point on the frame as the winch bumper. In a double line situation, that point on the right side of the frame is taking a lot of load, and there are only two 12MM bolts and two 10MM bolts attaching the bumper to the frame per side. Not only are the 10MM bolts relatively small in dia, but they are going into a cheesy stamped steel bracket that attached the light weight stock bumper.

I left off the hook and am considering other options - perhaps running two sleeves thru the frame for two 1/2-20 bolts...

What say you?? Am I being overly cautious??

That is something I have been comtemplating for some time Mark. Currently have a hook mounted on both sides in the same holes as the TJM uses. Haven't used winch with block back to one of them yet, but wonder about the amount of stress on that bit of frame end if I did.

Mark,
I am not 100% sure of your question, but if I understand it correctly you need to do the endcap mod if you have not done so already.

Hey Mike!

I'd like to have a recovery point on both sides too. It's nice to have the option...just a wee bit concerned about the loading.

Hey Wil!

The '98 bumper attaches to the bottom of the frame - there is no mounting point on the bumper for the end of the frame. Guess I can fab up both tho - that would certainly strengthen the whole setup.

Hey Dave!

I'll try to get a couple pic's taken when I can! It's a wee bit cold and wet at the moment - it's about 30 degs and snowing right now...

I hear ya. Same here the past few days and my backlog of garage stuff is growing as my desire to be out there goes down. I'd like to see the problem you're up against. My gut tells me that you might be right in considering some reinforcement. The front end of the Tacoma was designed to be more crash friendly than the older trucks and a doubled winch pull is a lot of force.

Ditto!

End cap is a must when mounting a winch on the front of these Toyota's!

That's probably generally true, but I don't see where the TJM is using the fastener in the frame horn. Seems like Mark would have to modify the bumper, too.

Mark,
I also have a TJM T-17 with a Warn M8000 and like you share your concern about excessive load in a double line situation. What I've done to address this is installed some DIY shackle hangers a la Sonoran Steel design. See here for pictures compliments of Chuck. Then when I rig for a double line pull I use a longer strap or chain connected to both shackle hangers with the winch line connected to the middle of the strap or chain. That way the load is better distributed over both fram rails.

Cheers,
P

I'll investigate that as an option!

I'm considering adding a structural cross member to replace the stock skid plate mounting point. The stamped steel piece flexes every time I R/R the skid plate when changing the oil The skid plate is an AZrain made one that I double the thickness on - it weighs over 50 lbs. I've got some 2" x 3" x 3/16" square tubing I could use to replace it with.

Thanks for the input!

If you do build in a cross member, post up some pics of what you are up to.
Sounds like a great solid solution.

I certainly don't think you are being overly cautious. I like the above mentioned mods, but using the grade 8 bolts you mentioned will go a long way towards preventing disaster as well. For under 10 bucks you could swap everything over to a grade 8 or high shear bolt no problem.

nice looking truck btw.
