well, with the price of the gas being what it is, I thought some of you might be interested in this truck that my friend has for sale - asking price is about $3600 but he's open to discussion...

Here's the actual description he had (sorry for the long post) (I have more pictures if interested):

This is a really nice rust-free California Toyota 4x4 short-bed pickup (aka Hilux).
You'd be hard-pressed to find another 92 Pickup in this condition.

Summary of this Toyota 4x4 ownership opportunity:

* It's a rare 92 rust free 4x4 with 5 speed manual and 22RE engine.
* 4 cylinder 22RE engine, great gas mileage for 4x4 pickup.
* 216k original miles and a clean California title.
* 2nd owner since 1997. It has been lovingly maintained. It is hard to believe this is a 16 year old truck!!
* The truck looks decent, is clean, and drives wonderfully.
* Easy to work on, parts are inexpensive and readily available.
* If you live in California, this truck just passed the smog test. You will not have to smog it again for 2 years.
* This Truck is ready for a lengthy trip. No repairs are necessary.
* As gas prices go up, small 4 cyl trucks will likely increase in value.

The truck is located near San Francisco, CA.
Exterior
There is no rust whatsoever on the body. The paint is still factory ORIGINAL and the hood, fenders, doors etc still have the original VIN stickers on them (none of the panels were ever replaced). Being original, the paint has some minor blemishes, minor dents, dings, and scratches. There is also a large dent on the drivers door that should be easy to pop out. That being said, the body on this truck is still way above average for Toyotas of this vintage. The truck has always lived in California, and most of the time garaged.

Please look at the photos carefully.

The windshield is cracked on the drivers side, down close to dash. It does not affect field of vision/driveability. The outside mirror on the drivers door is also cracked, but is still usable.

The frame and undercarriage has some very minor light surface rust, but still way above average for this generation of truck. The tires are in fair to good condition. The headlights, turn signals, horn, wipers etc, all work as they should. The doors fit well and close easily with a satisfying "thunk." The 6 foot "short bed" has a Bac*Pac canopy and Duraliner bedliner already installed. Throw a foamy and sleeping bag in the back and you have a nice place to sleep when four wheeling in the back country.

There are also heavy duty tubular bumpers and side steps. The rear bumper has a receiver for a trailer hitch.

Interior
For the age of the car, the interior is very clean. The seat upholstery is ripped on the drivers side (like on all early 90's Toyota trucks) and should be recovered or at least have a seat cover installed. There are 3 seatbelts, although it is a little tight with 3 people on the bench seat. There is some storage behind and under the seat for small toolbox etc. There is an in-dash Pioneer AM/FM radio with cassette. Radio works fine.

Powertrain and Drivability
The mileage on the truck is approx 216,000 miles. This truck is in excellent running condition. The 2.4 litre 4 cylinder 22RE engine starts right up, has plenty of pep, and it does not overheat. Overall the engine is very healthy. It passed the strict California smog test on May 28th with way above average readings. Some people feel the 22RE is Toyota's most bulletproof engine ever made. It's also much better on fuel than Toyota's 6 cylinder engine.

The 5 speed manual transmission shifts fine, and so does the transfer case. The manually engaged Aisin lockers were recently serviced and work perfectly.

Other recent work includes tune up/engine oil/filter, new front brake pads, front drive axles, tie rods, steering relay rod, and thermostat. This truck is ready for a road trip. I would feel comfortable driving it anywhere in North America as it is.

I don't need another vehicle but Nice Truck.

What is 'real world' MPG for a truck like this, City & Hwy?

Ya can't get over 20mpg with a 5sp & 22RE, lockable hubs & little bitty tires? Shocker....

I agree my reg cab taco gets 20 mpg now with all the heavy armour 255 tires and 4.88 gears. It has got to do better then that.

I had the same year/engine/tranny truck from '94 - '02. Drove it 120k in that time. Great little truck. With careful driving mileage could be as high as 22-24mpg. No more, no way. Sold mine in '02 for $4500, which was the going rate at the time. In true Toyota fashion they hold their value.

UH, well even with my AFM being a bit off and having a heavier 4Runner I'm getting around 19 in the city and well over 20 on the highway (my motor only has 2.5k on it though). That thing should get that easy. I'd say something's off with the motor.

Cheers

Well that's what I was thinking. I would've bet a half bottle of warm beer that a 22RE on stock tires would get in the mid 20's. It just doesn't sound right that it doesn't. I used to get almost 22mpg on the hwy with my 3.4ltr V6 when it was closer to stock.

I would ask my 22RE guru DaveinDenver, but he's DaveinRubithon this week. But it doesn't sound like Kermit was getting near that either on his.

Very confusing....

And 2aroundtheworld, you might PM a link to this thread to the guy from (Ireland, I think?) who just posted about wanting to buy an early 90's Toyota truck when he flies into LAX in a month or so. He has a big western US trip in mind. This truck could be ideal for him.
