Fuel Can ??

I picked up a real nice Jerry Can out of someone's garbage! It's in perfect condition from what I can tell, and even had the pour spout on it!

What I need to know is what is the proper way to clean it out, not sure what it could have been used for but it does smell like gasoline, and what's the best way to test for leaks?

I would flush it out with a couple of litres of petrol then leave it to dry naturally with the top open for a while.

after that you could fill with water to test for leaks and leave to dry again in the same way. check right around the seem for leaks, but the biggest problem is usually the flip lid itself, check the rubber seal to see if its there or perished.

and lastly, dont use it for drinking water! no matter how well you clean it. Use it for fuel only. :coffeedrink:

I'd put a half gallon in, splash it around, then run that gas in a simple engine like your lawnmower or something. Lather Rinse Repeat a few times. I picked up a couple MFC's that were used for diesel that I plan to do the same with.

To check for leaks just fill it, tighten the lit and set it in the sun. The sun will pressurize it. Just make sure you have 5 gallons worth of free tank space in a vehicle somewhere close in case it does have a hole.
