Fun Monday in the Brushy's

Through my professional life, I have worked mostly at camps. In those camps I made some fantastic friends that left and went to other camps. One of those friends and his wife now live and work at a camp in the Brushy mountains of Wilkes county NC. This is a beautiful camp with mountains and old logging roads and trails all over the property.

Monday, as an early celebration to my successful completion of grad school, my friend and I went and explored up one of the main logging roads. We took my truck as far asI was comfortable and it was safe to go and then hiked the rest of the way into the middle of the forest to a site that has a ton of spear tips and arrow heads as well as all of the flakes associated with the making of these tools.

Along the way, we say the remains of a farmhouse that locals say was the home of former slaves and was inhabited up into the 1950s. Judging by the forest growth, that seems about right. There is also a wonderful overlook from which you can see Table rock, Grandfather Mountain and many other of the peaks in the Blue ridge. This is definitely a favorite spot of mine to access and I plan on returning soon.

I'd send it in smoke signals, but I forgot my code book

Something that continues to surprise me is the capability of my truck in mostly stock form. I had one spot where I had to engage 4lo and it was mud deeper than my tires. I really am ready to get out and do more wheeling as soon as I can
