Anyone ever mess with rear diff to get a little higher top end? dealer said no way. I'm making a dirt bike hauler / camper but its just too slow to go across the country in a reasonable time.

I thought the FE had higher gears than the FG. I assumed it could cruise at 70mph or so.

Hmmm. According to the MItsubishi website the FE has a 5.250 and the FG a 4.875 so it would appear that swapping an FG rear end for an FE rear end would increase cruising speed. Busbee truck parts specializes in parts for Fusos.

faster FE

Interested to hear what the gears are like in canters from any of the guys not in north america. Its always discouraging here in the states to browse the web and see all the cool stuff the rest of the world uses.
Anyway - bigger tires... so simple I never even thought of it. I need to increase about half a gear or add 10mph to each gear... hopefully lack of syncros on 2nd gear is not a problem.
Can I get singles with same load capacity (three ton or so)? exploring this site - what a great resource for someone who loves these trucks. not much else out there and not many people tuning them up here in the states. thanks!

Bad syncros appear to be pretty common in these trucks. If the box is like the FG, from a stop, pull the shifter into third before going into second and it should solve any grinding problems. Double clutch on downshifts.

Michelin makes LR D 8.25R16 XZLs with a traction tread that have 10% more load capacity in the rear and 5% more in front, than the stock tires.
Other 8.25R16s are up to LR G, with massive load capacity.
The trick is finding and paying for them.
I bought a set of Michelins a few years ago for a BJ60 Landcruiser. They were about $350 each delivered in Anchorage.

These are a severe tyre however have a look on this data sheet
http://www.toyo.com.au/LTRPDFs/M504z.pdf
Some of the tyre fitters have a problem putting the wider tyres on the rear (duels) due to the smaller gap between the tyre walls & thus less cooling & greater chance of tyre failure.

OK so I get about 53 mph at 2500 rpms right now on 16 inch wheels and a rear diff at like 6.1 or so. How does that compare to other trucks out there? I'm wondering if its an excuse to trade up and get a newer one with a 6 speed possibly...

there is a program online that lets you punch in your tire specs and tells you how much faster or slower you will go if you change up your tire size. in order to get another 8 or 9 mph I had to increase my tire/rims to 20" which I'm guessing is not really an option. I'll try to find the link..

The tire calculator I've used online would not take the 8.25x16 tire size no matter how many different ways I tried to enter it.

speed and RPM calculator that I use works great and is very simple. You will have to convert the 8.25 tires to P-metric equivalent, though:

http://www.scirocco.org/gears/

25.4mm in an inch, wheel size is 16", so you only need to figure the sidewall, which should be easy if you know the overall height of the tire.
