Mercedes is trying to get out of the business of selling the Gelandewagen to the public, but demand continues. A USA spokesperson for Mercedes said in an interview that the G55 model will be discontinued in 2012, but the G550 will be available.

Sales to the public of the short wheelbase three door model, not imported to USA, will cease in 2012. Soon you'll need to enlist in the Bundeswehr to get your hands on a new Gelandewagen.

I am sad to see the G-Klass fading away as a new model. Even being a 30 year old vehicle, they are still impressive and quite refined.

No need to be sad. The G550 is still coming to the US for a while, that article is misleading and haphazardly posted all over with total disregard for the facts pertaining to which models and what countries.

Actually the G55 is only not coming in 2012 while they swap in the new twin turbo 5.5 engine that is going to be called the 63. The engine name is M157. All reports I've seen say the AMG G will be back after 2012 hiatus similar to how the car they put the same engine into missed a year.
