Garmin GPS 12 - Still useful, or time to upgrade?

I'm not too much of a gadget type of guy, but I do find some things useful(HAM) and would like to know more about others(GPS). I've had a Garmin GPS 12 for several years now, and have used it all but a handful of times. Instead of going out and buying a new, top of the line unit, I'd like to learn how to use mine efficiently.

I turned it on a few minutes ago on the roof of my office building(good battery power) and it took close to 5 minutes to locate my position. It has never taken this long to locate. Also, when I was moving around on the roof, the bearing would not change, or when it did, it did so very slowly and not even to the correct bearing.

So, I am wondering if the technology of this GPS 12 is outdated and no longer working properly, or if it needs new batteries(3/4 power currently...no pun intended), or even an update to the software?

What do you all think the possible problems could be?

Also, in your past experiences with GPS, how has this unit rated for you?

Thanks

Gavin

It will take a long time to locate itself if it has not been turned on for a long time, or if it has been moved a long way from where it was last used (ie, you took it across the country on an airplane). I would be concerned if it takes a long time to acquire a day or two later.

I still love mine and it works great with my Delorme map software on the laptop. It's also great on hikes for a breadcrumb return trail.
It might take less time to connect if you tell it what region you are in. I usually use the auto locate but sometimes find it quicker to tell it where I am.

I just can't bring myself to drop money on a newer more feature laden unit, but would love to have a Garmin 276c. They just cost so much..
