Gas in surplus military diesel cans

My local military surplus has a nice selection of surplus diesel and kerosene cans in very good condition. If I wash one out a bit with gas, is it safe to use as a gas can?

NATO style? Yes, but only because there may be some dirt in them.
There are no issues going back and forth between diesel and petrol once they are clean.

I don't know if some of the other brands use differen gasket materials for gas versus diesel, but the Scepter Military Fuel cans (plastic) use viton on the gas and rubber on the diesel. They can have some swelling/leaking issues with the wrong gasket use.
