Gears in XJ

My 4.10's on 31" run exactly as my 3.55's on 28" did. With 32-33" tires, I would do nothing less than 4.56's. Living where I have to climb hill/mountains to get out of town plays a big part of that. If you are mainly a flat lander, 4.10 could do fine but you will be using 3rd gear a lot if you have any hills.

My .02 worth.

yup. agree with mike and brad. Definitely the way to go.

Now, be aware, though, that I've heard of guys with auto's doing fine with up to 33's on stock 3.55's, but the loss of power and mpgs are noticable, as are the raised temps if you have to go up hills. Your truck will be fine, though, if you need to run like that for a few weeks before getting to your gears...

(e.g. install lift and tires, and then the next week get gears/lockers done...I'd much rather do it that way, than have super high gears/lockers on tiny wheels. You'd be revving the crap out of your 4.0l..haha. It'd be a tire-spinner, though.)

4.10's would be good. I'm on 31's with stock 3.55 gearing. It belongs on 4.10, but I've been just fine with mild wheeling and running in "3" below 50 or so. The question is what axles are you on and what is your intended use for this rig? At a certain point (33's and hard wheeling) the Dana 35 is pushed pretty far. I'm hung up deciding whether to regear with the weaker stock axles or find D44's or Ford 8.8 rear at least.

I was fine with the stock setup when I had 31's on my XJ, even when towing a small trailer.
1998 Auto with D30 front and Chrys. 8.25 rear with 3.55's.

I finally drove it again last Friday after getting a larger 4.5" lift and the 33x12.5R15's MT's on it. Aside from the bumpsteer I'm experiencing (booooooo) there is definitely a lack of power driving on the street.

I was really thinking of going 4.88's but the shop here in town said their supplier has nothing shorter than 4.56's. But, they also gave me some other information on the carrier break which is contrary to what I've read online, and I'm not sure if I trust them...

Sorry about the aside. lol
Go with 4.56's and you'll be pretty happy.
Honestly, it would be a tossup between the 4.56's and the 4.10's because you're running approx. a 32" tall tire.

Someone else mentioned in another thread about this topic "You never hear someone say they should have gone with shorter (numerically) gears." ;)
