Well, looks like i need to do a water pump on my 91 Montero. Can anyone direct me to a Service Manual online? Did a search but couldn't find what I needed.

Yes. Off the top of my head...

1) You'll need to 'jam' your starter ring gear in your transmission or use the bump start trick to loosen your crankshaft bolt.

2) either buy the OEM mitsu water pump or be prepared to possibly also have to buy the rear o-ring (between the pump housing and cooling tube that runs back between the engine head 'V'.

3) You may want to replace the main crankshaft bolt if mitsu has released a recommended replacement. Some of the older ones break prematurely. Check your VIN for the new one with your dealer.

4) Should also replace your pulleys and tensioner along with your accessory belts.p

5) also check your fan and fan clutch in case they shoul be replaced...

For most of the needs of a 91 Montero, the 89 service manual will suffice. Differences do exist. The 89 has a one-year specific smog setup, distributor, EGR valve, driver's side exhaust manifold, and no lock-up convertor for the trans. The 90-91 are similar to eachother.

Thanks for the link! Curiously the 91 is not on there? I'm sure the 89 will work for me though.

Has anyone else done the water pump on a Gen 1? Any tips or advice?

I only pick FSMs that i can get for cheap. No way I can spend $75+ a shot for all that is there, especially when the token amount of donations barely covers the hosting. (Note that the site isn't there to make me money though. It is my way of giving back to the community that has helped me so many times.)

With all that, I'll add that I do have a 90-91 combined set in hard copy. Haven't had time to get the spine shaved, scan it, and update the site. For one, my laptop that has the site on it is on the fritz. So, I need more time to deal with that. In fact, I have a stack about two feet tall that needs scanning. :Wow1:

Anyway, if you get stuck and the 89 doen't seem to answer your question, if you need to ping me, best to do by the email addy in my profile, at least, do that if you are in a hurry.

Ride On,

No need, Ray, but thanks for thinking of it. You contribute your share and then some to the community... :victory:
