Gen 1 Under Dash Heat

Hey, my new (to me) Gen 1 SWB is legal and driving now, and I'm getting tons of heat coming into the cabin from under the dash. It doesn't seem to come through my vents, the air coming out of those seems to be cool. Without a functioning air conditioning, this is going to make a rough summer :26_16_2:

Any ideas or similar experience?

Fixing the AC was on the plan, but the heat was pouring out. Some sleuthing last night figured out that there is no shutoff valve for heat going to the heater core. I installed a ball valve in the heater core inlet line in the engine compartment, and problem solved!

Octocat,
You have something wrong with you temperature controls. Yes there is a shutoff valve. It is controlled by a control cable. Sometimes the plastic retainers come loose and while you are trying to lower the temperature, the cable moves like it should but because the plastics retainers come loose, they no longer travel in the guides properly.

I think I have pictures of this somewhere on my Picasa. I'll see if I can find them.

Here we go. I found the picture that I was thinking of. In this picture, you can see the cable in the lower half it connects to the linkage that opens and closes the valve. I suspect yours might be compromised somewhere.

That picture brings out memories... swapping out my leaking heater core. It was a PITA.
